Last one for today:

Front speaker/rear speaker for 1970 Trans Am. I'm guessing that many years of F-bodies ued the same set up, so this can't be that specialized (or can it?).

Now that new timing covers are gone, who's gonna step up to the plate and repro these?

Chris, please pursue these - they will eventually be a VERY high demand item!

Personally, I will be needing at least three of them in the forseen future. I'll need the '69-'79 cover, PN 527291 when it was discontinued.

70-73 Firebird tail panel. Even a "below the bumper" partial panel would satisfy most peoples needs..

I would like to see 67 lemans/tempest grilles. I have been seeing a lot of these cars being restored, not cloned it would be a wise product. Also seeing that 73,000 coupes were produced they are sure to be plenty out there.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by RamAirJohn:
Chris,

Could you perhaps explain the process of reproducing sheet metal and why there is such poor quality with so much of it especially quarter panels and fenders? I am in the mfg. business with some knowledge of tooling and die work and cannot understand why it's so difficult to accurately reproduce a stamped part.

The technology and material is much better than it used to be 30+ yrs ago. In many cases, there are even original drawings available. Could this be the result of an American company outsourcing the actual work to an Asian company and a lack of quality control? One would think that after 20+ yrs of repro sheet metal for Pontiacs, these companies would learn how to do it right the first time. Seems everytime I talk with someone who has used repro sheet metal, they describe the countless hours in labor required to 'massage' the panel or trim it to make it fit if it fits at all.

I realize PY is not directly to blame for all stamped parts they advertise; I'm just curious as to how there can be such poor quality. Seems to me that people would be more willing to pay for something IF it was better quality. I also realize the demand is always a factor but I can't see how this changes the design and mfg. process or, is it simply about $$$ and the American Company seeks out the cheapest shops in Asia to do the work.

Thanks in advance for the reply ! <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

The problem is that the dies are all made by usng a scanning device to 3 dimensionally scan an existing piece of sheetmetal. If the "master" panel is not right to begin with the "new" part will never be right. Just because the part is NOS does not mean it is exactly correct. The dies began to wear at the end of production runs etc etc. The best thing would be to have 3 of the same original panels that were well fitting on 3 different cars. Scan all three and then take the average measurements in order to "build" the dies.

The fullsize wagon door weatherstripping is available from Metro. I put a set on my '66 Catalina wagon about 18 months ago.

Fit was virtually perfect. I think one push pin was not in the correct place to match the existing holes in my door.

No tail gate weatherstripping was available however.

Someone needs to make a decent door and rear quarter window channel for 64 post coupes. The universal stuff just doesn't work worth a darn.
