I had an 88 Iroc 350 TPI with 2.77 gears and auto. 40k original miles. It went mid 14's stock. With shorty headers, off road Y-pipe, Edelbrock cat back, and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator it went 13.90 at 99 mph with tire spin. Wasn't a bad running car. There were decent performers throughout those years if you knew how to order a car.

As far as second gens, I've always been attracted to the 70-73's first and foremost, mainly because I'm more of a muscle car straight line kind of guy and after the early 70's that went away with all models. There is no way I'd pay more money for a later 70's version of these cars with less straight line performance. I simply don't value them as high as an early 70-73 bird, especially when talking about ram air cars and round port 455's. |

You got me beat. I had a stock 83 ho 5 speed 3:73 car and ran with a 14.69 in the late 80's.

Most people don't realize they made Trans Ams before 1977.

I've never run into that before, you must be hanging out with a young age group. Guess I'm getting old but every car nut I associate with are well aware of early TA's.

Eh, I wouldn't make a mountain out of a mole hill. I think we just have different age groups that like different things. If you weren't born before at least 1975, then most wouldn't be old enough to even remember Pontiac making their own engines, let alone any car before that, lol.

come on guys, stock means stock. The big GM catalytic converter, stock tires etc etc. The Grandnational was the fastest car in that era and faster than most if not all 1970's cars and it RAN 14.5 on a good day.

I know I was there when the GN was new, it was quick for its day.

New, stock GN's could get in the upper 13's with a good driver. Many would run in that range. A friend bought a new 87 back then a he ran it at Atco raceway. He would run 14.2's without spooling the turbo up.

My 91 Typhoon used to destroy those cars as well as the new vettes. It was a bone stocker and ran 13.80's coming off idle with no boost. On one boosted launch I went 1.67 60 foot but aborted the run. Probably low 13 on that pass. It would 60 foot anything on the street back then

When it was cold possibly but the Goodyear tires would spin while the car was moving, so bone stock it ran mid 14's.

Something closer to topic then, if completely stock is what we are comparing, My 70 Formula is pure stock legal, and not pushing the rules for compression or camshaft, and has went 13.60's on it's stock tires (1.8x 60 foot times if the track is half way decent) With it's 3890 race weight it works well.
It's looking good that that come Feb at the Pontiac drags it will go even quicker. There weren't any cars from the 80's, or even the late 70's that would run that well in stock form, not even the GN's. The only car a hair quicker was the 89 turbo TA but they were so few and far between they hardly count. Hung with a couple guys that ran those GN's religiously up through the 1990's and 2000's, lived near Lonnie's shop that worked on them all the time so GN's were everywhere around town.. Unless they were running around on the street with a drag radial they weren't too much of a threat. Didn't take too much tinkering though to make them fast. Crank up the boost, a few mods, a Lonnie trans with a brake and a good tire and they were pretty quick. Buddy of mine had one he drove daily modded similar and running 11.50's on a little 235/60 drag radial. Fiscus lived close and drove his 8 second GN on the street fairly often. Tend to agree with you Matt (though besides a '72 & '73, own two W72 4spd projects & still have my turbo SE.)
Let us not forget, '75 model stock performance was so bad, in Car & Drivers '75 roadtest's, the quickest '75 model American built car, 0-60, was a Cosworth Vega.

To be honest I could care less, its a cruiser to me and a cherished car. I have cars that run in the low twelves (new and old). When I sit in the 70 formula it brings me back to my child hood when my uncle would come over with his 73 formula which was dark blue on dark blue with wide ovals and I would ask to sit in the car ( I was 8 years old). 15.0 is ok with me |
