Take some lacquer thinner to the circled area to see if you can find the stamped date code.

Interesting! I spoke with a guy at MCACN this year who bought his '72 Trans Am new in April 1972 and he still owns it today. He said it was delivered with Firestore Wide Ovals.

Exactly! LOL
You made my day. But thank you for looking. The Morse-stamped chains must have dominated the early aftermarket replacements. My first Pontiac o'caca was the nylon gear time-bomb...around 1980 in our 70 Tempest. I'm amazed yours still had one semi-intact. |

His car was built very late in the strike-shortened 1972 model year and he said it was originally equipped with Firestone tires. Consequently, my dad's car was built only a few days ahead of his, and per vintage photos the original owner showed to my dad, it was originally equipped with Goodyear tires. |

IIRC that feature is what makes air cleaners manufactured for the 1970 model year unique. Rocky's recent book shows how the RAIV was intended to be a year long option, but only after several delays was the "GTO" L67 ok'd for Firebird use; This all plays into my personal theory as to why some 1971 (455HO) aircleaners got the studs - I believe they were manufactured with the intent of being used on RAIV Formulas - then none having been build, they were used up on 1971 cars.

My late built 72 TA has UDDL on the build sheet. I used to work for Goodyear from 79-93 and I'm not 100% sure but I thought I remembered UDDL being printed on the tread of some of their tires. Anyone else remember that? Curious if all 72 Formula 455 and TA build sheets have UDDL. Does anyone else have their build sheets?

Here is a Norwood and Van Nuys UPC code on build sheet - PM7
(looks like for the white letter tire) Norwood: VanNuys: Written different than Norwwod, hard to read the UPC code though. And the code for the VanNuys tires looks like JDDL? Found some Formula with 15" tires, they were black wall I think. Different codes for them. (of course)

Since you mentioned Van Nuys, I assume you're including '71's? No 'F' Body for 1972 model year in Van Nuys.

NICE!!
According to the 1972 Firebird Assembly Manual, F60-15's were available from both Goodyear and Firestone. They had even assigned GM part numbers to them. All the different size and type 14" tires were available from Firestone, Goodrich, Goodyear, Uniroyal and General. These all had GM part numbers also. If you have the Assemble Manual, see page 10B-1 "Tire & Tire Placard Usage Chart". However, the date on this page is pre-production at 2-1-1971, so changes MAY have been made by the beginning of '72 production. |

Dan moved the Formula from the front garage into the shop under its own power since it first arrived (couldn't get it started to move it out of the hauler and pushed it 200' into the garage!). We are glad it wouldn't start as it needed so much work to the engine and cooling system it could have made needing a more invasive teardown right off the bat. Dan is going through the brakes and electrical right now and he is discovering all the brake components are factory originals...albeit worn, but original. The rubber brake hoses actually look really good, but the rotors and drums need to be turned as the original linings were worn down to the rivits and backers. The front bearings will be checked and repacked as the dust caps look like they have never been removed!
Correction on the secondary side of the carb...it has an 'N' hanger with DA metering rods (0.440" M tips). Dennis |

You are correct. The sheet is very dirty (pic from PY?) and it was saved as 72. Can't see the actual year on VIN. But it is probably 1971. Sorry for that. (have changed the file name on my computer) Formula is looking good BTW.
