North, I think they used the same large single snorkel air cleaner that the GTO std. and HO motors used.

North, The one we used is from a '71 455 B-body motor, so the snorkel is a bit shorter. I wish the '68's used the open element air cleaner from '67 as they look so nice under the hood. Dennis

Yup, I love that look, I had a 67 HO GTO way back and I found that open air cleaner looked as good as a tripower set up, a factory take on the hot rod look!

John, what car is this a picture of? It's a '69. I see cruise control, A/C, Instant Aire, HO style air cleaner lid, ?

Remember the car, was very rough, a restoration would have been a bottomless pit. Remember because I had just found my 68 sedan car, farm car in Iowa, 53k original. Will be for sale soon, I'm leaving town.

mnfatcat, Yep, its going to take a lot of work, but how many real 428 HO, M21, 4.11 Catalina 2-dr coupes are left? This is the only one I've ever seen. We have to save this one...it's our density (to rob a line form Back To The Future). It's not as bad as it first looks and primarily needs rear quarters the front lower fender patches. The floor needs one small patch under the drivers feet, but the frame is solid everywhere (just crusty). It also needs trunk patches at the sides and drop-offs. The interior is really nice and clean, just needs a small worn area replaced at the drivers seat (came with a couple yards of NOS upholstery). The dash and headliner are perfect. The OO really took good care of this car and it shows. I'd feel otherwise if it wasn't completely numbers matching and intact.

I applaud and admire your enthusiasm, it is absolutely deserving of your efforts. The guy could have bought a 427 Biscayne or a Hemi Roadrunner at the time for about the same money, had to be a real Pontiac guy for sure. You must have the OO's same passion, hope all goes well for you.

mnfatcat, Fortunately, we didn't have to pay those kind of prices for this car. Sorry to hear you are selling your 68. It is really a nice one and they are far and few between these days. Good luck with the sale.

"The guy could have bought a 427 Biscayne or a Hemi Roadrunner at the time for about the same money..."
Brain fart, now I see what you were saying...for the same money back in the day. I agree, the OO must have been a real Pontiac man. An L72 425 hp/427 Biscayne probably cost a little more, but not much. I wish there were original pictures of the OO and the car back when it was new. Dennis |

428HO Update
Dan pulled the front end sheet metal off the car yesterday. The cowl is solid where a rust-belt car typically rots away...more testimony to the OO's great care to his baby. The lower fenders are gone, but the car came with solid front fenders. The bumper and valance are solid as in the front core support. The rest of the interior is coming out for a good cleaning. The original carpet is in decent shape and will hopefully be reused if it cleans up well.
The block and heads are getting cleaned and magged before heading to the machine shop. along with a new forged bottom end with flat top pistons that should net an actual 10.75:1 compression depending on deck height, head gasket thickness, etc. The goal is to keep it at the factory 10.75:1 rating. The original 068 cam looks great and will be reused. The motor will be dyno'd with the long branch exh. manifolds and 2.5" head pipes with the original Q-jet and points distributor to get close to a "net' horsepower rating. Since the car is going back to its as delivered state, the 4.11's are going back in the rear end and with G70x15 Red Line Wide Ovals. Hopefully it'll be ready for the Pure Stock Drags next year (2018). Dennis |

The car I remember seeing was in far worse shape than yours if memory serves. The rear quarters were gone damn near to the moulding, yours is looking great, will be a super car.

The body is completely stripped of anything that is bolted to the shell now. Another nice surprise is all the body mounting bolts came out easily, so the body will be separated from the frame soon. The doors are really in nice shape with only very minor surface rust at the corners that is easily repairable. Other than the lower rear quarter panels and trunk floors at the wheel tubs needing to be replaced, the overall body is more solid than we expected...a pleasant surprise.
The 428 HO is motor is getting the machine work done now and Dan is planning on achieving the advertised 10.75 to 1 compression without cutting the heads and block deck by adjusting the piston dish. It's getting new .030 over forged pistons (and rods) with a custom dish to tailor the compression. On the Desktop Dyno, with the 068 cam (that he plans on reusing since it is in great condition as well) and 10.75 compression thru the long branch manifolds, it predicts 415 hp and 480 lb. ft torque, which is usually very conservative to actual dyno results. It is definitely under-cammed, but the car is going to be raced at the Pure stock drags and it will be stock with it's factory 4.11 rear end and M-21 trans. Dennis |

Marxjunk, Thanks for the support! It's too cool a car to ignore, or part it out. It's PMD's version of the L72 427 Biscayne after all. It is going to look sweet in its original Voodoo green paint and black guts. It came with VooDoo painted steelies with dog dishes and that's where it is returning to. Dan is putting a lot of labor into it along with the needed $$$, but there may not be another factory original one like it anywhere anymore. We think there were 12 to 15 of the 428HO/M21/4.11 combinations ordered in 1968 and we haven't seen another one (yet).
