A little update for those following along...I hesitate to call this momentum - but at least it is progress...
The roof is done to the point that it has less than about 1/16" variance in height which should allow the whole thing to be bodyworked without excessive amounts of filler. The roof seams and two areas where the patch panel joined the windshield channels have been leaded. And all the bare metal is in epoxy primer to protect it. Also a little more work was done to the passenger quarter to get the quarter panel extension to fit way better than the factory fit. This involved making a small piece of the quarter and welding and planishing it in. This has been an area of these cars that I notice - to me the detail of the quarter extension fit is often the difference between a nice car and a really nice car. Thanks for following along. Hopefully we can keep the rock rolling and continue making progress. |

Hi Everyone,
A little update in case anyone is following along with this resto...We are under the knife (well cut-off wheel) again. This time a previous repair to the driver's quarter is being addressed. I had considered leaving it more-or-less as is, but everything else was coming out so nice. The driver's quarter had a patch in the lower quarter which was installed with a flanged and partially welded seam. This quarter also has some collision damage which was poorly repaired. Here is a photo of the damaged area after long boarding the layout blue showing the "bag-of-walnuts" look of the panel. The repair consists of making a new patch panel to eliminate the previously welded seam. This patch will be gas-welded in place and planished smooth make the repair essentially invisible. Some hammer-and-dolly work will improve the damaged area of the quarter. I will post some more photos of the work after it is completed. Thanks for following along. I have had very good results...and I'm strictly an amature here... with Rage Gold and Rage Ultra for filler.
Always wanted to try lead myself... and I may yet.

Just make sure before you prime over the lead...you clean that lead good with Acetone.

Hi Mr. Reid and Musclcah...Thanks for the recommendations on the filler to use. I haven't done this sort of work in a long time...so I'm figuring on steep learning curve catching up on 30 years or so of development.
With regard to lead work: It was really interesting to watch the process. It looked like quite the balancing act between keeping the body metal hot enough and the lead short of the temperature where it would just run. Thanks again to everyone for their input and interest. Yup...it’s a fine line with lead...but it still has its place in body work today....I still use it ,in certain applications.

Lead is his preferred filler in the roof corners where the factory laid it in. There is nothing quite like watching a skilled, knowledgeable craftsman at work. You can learn a lot quickly, although it is no substitute for experience.

Hi Everyone...
Here is a look at the work as it is progressing on the driver side quarter panel. Work with a slapper and dolly straightened the collusion damage, and the new patch is welded in. The area still needs finishing to address the welded area and the distortion from the heat. But all-in-all it seems to be shaping up well so far. |

I thought I would post a quick update for those following along...The quarter panel repair is nearly finished and is turning out nice.
Today - I checked out and purchased some seats that had been listed on Craigslist locally. Thanks to the PY Forums (and Chief in particular), the seats were ID'd as '64 Olds A-body. So now I have a correct set of seat frames and sliders to replace my later-model seats that came with my car. |

Hi Chris,
It is a seat riser from the last vehicle these seats were in. I thought he said an old Chevy (K5 maybe). The feet of the sliders are tacked to riser - so it will take a little careful work with a cut-off wheel to free them. Here is a different view... |

I haven't updated this thread in a little bit - but that doesn't mean nothing is happening. The final metal work is continuing and hopefully we will be through with the metal shaping and into the final pre-paint body work soon.
In preparation for the painting I have got some spray-outs of a colors and some interior samples.... And today - thanks to PY member GOAZWildcats, I have a set of heads to build for the engine. So for those following along - the tortoise is still advancing toward the finish line. |
