I agree it seems high, actually in my teenage years with the car you would not believe where I had that car in the mountains. Has been places trucks could not go.. |

66 looked like raw power with the 3x2's, (but not if you got stuck with that wonderful two speed automatic). I have to give the 67 the edge though with the dual gate, although the 4 speed was preferable, at least to me, in both model years. Loved the grill work on the 67's and give that an edge over the 66. Ditto with the seat covers on the 67. 66 has the edge on taillights. All in all, it's like choosing between a gorgeous blonde or a beautiful brunette, both of whom love cars, hunting, sports, and me. Decisions!

I love them both, but my favorite would be a '67 front end with a '66 rear end if that combo had existed from the factory.

Did finally get mine figured out and lowered 3 inches.. Not sure why the front sat high but the rear had some things done on upper spring pocket and shock mount.. way better now.

Me too!!!
I like the '66 just a little better. Primarily because my dad had one new (See pic from '66). It was a 4-barrel, 4-speed, 3.89 gears (iirc)). No power anything. Dad said it just cost HP and made it heavier lol. My dad also had a '64 new. It was black with red interior. Same 4-barrel, 4-speed, 3.89 gears. I like '66 louvered tail lights. I like the wide '67 rocker molding, Q-jet, 400 turbo, H&H shifter, wire grill. That's my dad and grandpa in the pic btw. |

i'm partial to my 66, she's been in the family since new and i've owned it since '86. my dad loved the 66, but blended the best of the 67. mine has 67 interior woodgrain and dual-gate, 400 trans, and lower rocker trim. it's not original, but it's been like that since the early 70's so i would not dream of changing it now.

seems like they didn't know what to do w/the '67 rear end after the classic '66 tail lights

Sure they did! The 67 tail lights were developed so the competition could see them a long way down the road!

I would vote for the 66 because it was my first car when I got back into cars after 25ish years. Found a local tripower, 4 speed original conv. Also have a 67. Both great cars.

67 had the THM400 and a real His and Hers. (68 was decontented).

In stock form 67 is better because;
1. 400 inches. 2. Better heads with the valve angle = larger valves. 3. Q jet carb and manifold- great for mileage, road racing, better fuel distribution. 4. Disc brakes, dual master cylinder. 5. collapsible steering column. 6. THM 400, although a ST300 can run just as fast if you put a shift kit in it and a switch pitch converter from a Buick or Oldsmobile ST300, for some terrible reason Pontiac division didn't get a switch pitch in their ST300. Aesthetics The 66 has a better front grille, also has a better taillight and the molding on the edge of the trunk flows upward and downward on the flanked fender ends. The 67 has a better side profile, and while it's almost identical to the 66, the 67 has rocker and door molding that emphasize the coke bottle flanks making it look leaner not quite as fat on the sides. I remember going down to the dealer to get a look at the "new" 66's and thinking "NO"! you guys are making this car too big and heavy compared with the 64-65 ! |

I a little partial as I had a 66 out of high school and now I have restored a 66 to restomod specs.
The tail lights do it for me also a Tri Power |

I had a '66 back in the early '70s as a toy. While working at the dealer I bought every piece of trim, quarters, wheel housings, fenders etc. and stored all the parts in my spare bedroom before I got married. Sold the GTO in 1980 and the wife wears it on her finger.

I prefer the 67 grill, taillights, rocker trim and seat vinyl pattern over the 66, but hey I'm partial to a 67. The 66 is nice but I think the 67 model looks more refined.

The 67 IS more refined...think quadrajet and (if you wanted an auto) the turbo 400, which is worlds better than that miserable 2 speed with a 1.76 1st gear.
