I agree with Mike and Chris, Darrell and Bob both have MAD skills. This car will be something to behold. I'm with Mike in looking forward to seeing it in person this year. I know whos car will be winning some major awards this year.

Thanks guys for the kind comments, but there's a long way to go on this car and no one is doing a touchdown dance. The friendships and comraderie are more important than anything to me, and in that regard I am fortunate to have so many great resources to help and provide knowledge. I am also incredibly lucky to have an old dude like My Pal Dave to hang out with and turn a bunch of wrenches. He's the really talented one, I'm just a college boy coal peddler....
Doug - I haven't forgotten your generous offer and will certainly take you up on that. Once Darrell gets the body and paint work done the plan is to take the dressed out subframe, rear axle/spring assembly, and all the firewall pieces and parts up to his shop for installation prior to them doing final front end assembly. That will be a busy few days. Luckily Darrell has a spare subframe he is using to fit all the panels through the body and paint work. Thanks again. Here's a before pic.

All I can say is ......Wow!!!! You and Dave should be capturing this restoration in pictures (like Mike said earlier) for a new second gen Firebird Formula Restoration Guide. I'll buy the first copy!

So I was lucky enough to find a correct 1108436 starter. It's a little early on the date code, but after NJSteve's SD starter epilogue I am not sure that is the case. The starter was well used, but in great condition. It has now been rebuilt, refurbished, and is standing tall. In the rebuild the solenoid used was an NOS AC-Delco D992 high heat unit, and also the correct high strength spring. Here's a few pics...

I wonder if that scenario was because the factory stockpiled the HD/high heat starter assemblies for the 1972 model year round port motors - then with the factory strike contributing to very low production numbers, logically the 1972 stash of HD starters would have been used on the 1973 round port motors... That super lame that a car would be deducted for a part which has never been replaced. One thing I have learned, is that there is ALWAYS the exception to the rule...

It was fun to have Enrico, the original owner/enforcer there to provide testimony that the starter had never been touched. And along with my photographic proof of all those other starters which matched my car, (including the 1,700 mile car they had previously judged several years before), they had to concur that this was something they had never seen before.

Back to Black - I like that Mike...
A lot of odds and ends got done on the Black Car project this weekend. We need to get wheels mounted on the subframe before dropping in the engine so I finally got the honeycombs in process. I got them media blasted, and the inners and backs primed, wet sanded and finish painted. Now to let them dry for several days and dust the fronts. The spiral shocks also got finish painted and installed along with the steering box. The power steering hoses are in place on the power steering pump, and the fuel pump to carb line is in as well. Lastly, the NOS oil pressure sender has been correctly finished (thx to some good advice) and is installed. Here's a few pictures.
