That Consumer Guide magazine was a favorite of mine back when it hit the newsstands. Many of the color photos in there are of cars from my area. Some of the photos were taken during an all-Pontiac show back in the early 1980's here at a local Pontiac dealership in my hometown of Naperville IL. The concrete pad that some of the more prominent cars are displayed on is off to the side of the showroom, and the photos were taken the day of the show. I've purchased several Pontiacs from that dealership over the decades. It's now a Buick-GMC dealer.

Not sure where this photo came from, and I apologize if it's within this super long thread, but here's a painted roof Tempest, with hood tach.

When you think about it they were righting about cars only 15 years old but they seemed so old at the time.

It's funny to see them praising the then new pontiacs, when they were gutless junky cars. Anyone who has ever driven a combustable rattley slugbait fiero or those early bendy flexy wheezy gen 3 firebirds (I know because I had one in 83) can relate to why those the just used pontiacs from the late 60's were so desirable.
I know what you mean, I Traded in my 1st new car Purchase a Slug of a 301 4bbl 4-speed 79 Formula Firebird for a 84 305 HO 4-speed T/A. The T/A was 0.2 quicker (cant bring myself to use the word fast in describing either car. As my 69 Sprint Tempest would beat either of them) The T-tops rattled and leaked from the day I 1st removed them, the 79 Formula actually got 28mpg cruising at the 55MPH national limit. The 84 T/A got 19MPG at the same speed. When I finally got fed up with its pathetic performance I installed a very Mild 250 HP 383, and within a month I had cracked the drivers side rear 1/4 seam! (I never needed no sticking subframe connectors on any of my other street cars!)
I almost swore off GM products after that car. Traded it even up for a tired 69 GTO. I still think I got the better end of the deal, even if my Father thought I was the Stupidest Kid he had after that one.

Thumbs up JUNE 1983

When I first saw the pic of the SC in motion sporting rally 1 rims I new this was something I would add to my '66
Then I secured the Performance Brochure and it showed this image in full color and it sure appears the rims are painted body color which at the time I thought would be very cool, but I never pursued doing that.

Something odd about that blue Tempest base model, it does not have the 3 spears on it. Might be a delete thing since the sprint stripe goes in same area.

Jeff,

I just picked up a magazine on eBay called Auto Topics Sept 65 with a cover story on the OHC, have you ever seen it?

If not let me know and I'll get you scans of it when I receive it.

It was quicker to ask you than to scroll through all your neat posts ;-)

Never heard of that magazine but I noticed it dates to 1900!

Wonder when it croaked?

I wonder were that article got the information on Crank Shafts Whipping and Snapping? I raced Sprint engines hard on both 1/4 mile and road courses in the 70's and 80's, broke a lot of parts, had at least 2 rods go thru blocks that damaged Cranks, but never managed to break a Crank Shaft.
Heck I even had 1 Block Crack along the Skirt were a conventional oil pan would start. The only signs I had was an odd severe vibration at 6800-7000 RPM, and then it started leaking oil out the crack a couple of days later.

Thumbs up EXCELLENT write-up by Paul Zazarine

Test drive the new '66 SPRINT Today

Also in this issue is a Feature on a 1967 Drop-top Lemans,
normally I don't post featured cars in Flashback but I found it fitting as this one is almost a dead ringer for this years OUTSTANDING CAMMER award winner.

I never saw that issue in the day. The different beat section is riddled with errors.

I wonder who owns those two cars now?

Mac passed in 2011.
As far as I recall the Car is still within his family, the OHC engine is another story.
