Dennis,
I picked up an NOS dash emblem a couple of months ago for $40.00, and I have seen others advertised for close to that price. I'm probably going to install it on my car, since I think it should have one. Chris |

That poor thing has seen some sun.. Weird to see the 3 on the tree in an F body.

We have discussed the bezel bird in the past and here is what we decided. Early 70 non A/C cars had the bird toward the right side of the dash bezel. Late 70 and all later cars had the bird toward the left.

@Norwood
Wasn't that just about the Trans Am? I am unclear why the TA and lesser models would have the emblem placed in a different location, but that is what it looks like happened.

Dennis, If you're looking for a nice/nos one here's an fyi on the dash bird emblem.
The door panel emblem (1700550) for power window equipped cars has the same bird emblem, it's just attached to a button part that covers the window crank hole in the door panel. I discovered this decades ago when I ordered some of the 1700550's for a 77 TA I had at the time. Just carefully remove the push on clip & you'll have a nice dash bird! |

Here's a pic of the backside of some oem door emblems showing the clip to remove.

yes there were;
I'd have to find them, I have nearly every road test - the most common Formula tested was absolutely one of a couple 'YS' cars that did their rounds... IIRC there was only one of the RAIV TA, but I am willing to put my foot in my mouth at suggesting that a RA Formula was tested...

I think all the cars in these tests were pre-production - which is how any RAIV Firebird was tested...

Dennis,
These hood hinges are currently listed for sale on Facebook, and the ad says they are for a 1970 Firebird, so that is where I got these pictures. I have seen hinges with the part numbers X'ed out once before, but it was a long time ago and I don't have pictures of them. I know they were on a 1970 Firebird, but don't remember anything else, such as build date of the car, assembly plant, etc.... Chris |

Thanks Chris. The next item on the list is to pull the TH400 to go through it to make sure it is in good health. The Saf-t-Track rear end is nice and tight and fluid looks good.
We'd like to replace the exhaust someday with a Pypes 2 1/2" mandrel bent system with the transverse Race-Pro muffler and add the proper tips. It's to bad the auto dealer put on a new (wrong) Magnaflow header-back dual exhaust with the Turbo style mufflers. The tail pipes dump further ahead than a normal Firebird, so it looks like we would have to adapt the later version longer tips (74-up) to make the outlet end under the valance panel. Dennis |

My 7C TA was one of the ones that came with a 5/8 bar.

I recently went through the notes/pics I've taken over the years on original '70 T/As, and about 60% had the 5/8" rear bar. That's based on a little over 150 cars..., so only ~5% of production. But I'd bet it's pretty representative.

1970 Formula Update
The weather is getting a little warmer, so possible to work on the Formula again, which has been in the 'cold' garage for the last couple months. We bought some Pypes polished stainless steel 2.5" exhaust tips to see if they would work and how they would look on the Magnaflow tailpipes that have just the turn-down dumps for exits. Well, they exit further back and lower than the proper 2nd gen Firebird tailpipes, but this was an experiment to see how the tips need to be modified to look more factory correct in their positioning. Our goal is to work with what we have since the system is new. We will have to cut the tailpipe dumps a couple/few inches to raise the tips and then shorten the tip a few inches and add the correct steeper bevel cut to mimic the '70 tip angle. It will look more factory correct and won't be perfect, but we'll feel better than leaving it the way it is now. The TH400 will be removed and inspected in the next few weeks as well. We also found 14x7 CL steel wheels (thanks Steve Johns!) to restore and put back on the car with dog dishes.

congrats on the wheel find!
it took me ages to score a set - did you concern yourself with the minutia of dates on the wheels? I only ask because it seems any car you fix up, gets a level of detail that few go to; And I love watching your threads.

Jonny - No, we're not that concerned for this car. Steve had a set and wanted to know if we'd be interested...so we bought them. Here are pictures of the wheels that Steve sent. They are off a desert SW car, so not rusty and still has the original Castilian Bronze paint. I believe the date code 1 - 16 - 0 (K-1-0) is Jan. 16, 1970??? I can't retain all the details anymore...getting old.
