Sweet car PMDman! I'm in VA and never saw that car for sale (although I stopped looking at the market when I bought mine a year ago) SWEEEEET ride!
Here's another pic of my car, taken last weekend.. although I'll admit, the main star isn't the car but rather my 9 month old niece crawling on the hood! Oh... the things we let slide for our loved ones. Don't worry, she didn't dent or damage the paint although those pants weren't 100% cotton! She drooled on my door a few minutes later :P There were better pics of her behind the wheel with her mom hidden beneath her so it looks like she's driving it but I haven't gotton those yet! She's so cute! Sadly the car wasn't waxed up in the baby pic as it was in the other one. The other pic is the Six-Five right next to its younger yet harder-run brother, the 87 Bonneville.. which I <i>used</i> to think was a 'big' car till I got the red one. The red one had just been washed and zymoled at the time (circa 3 days ago). Mike |

Another sweet 64 GP!
I like the dash on those things. Lots of curves on the metal at the ends of it. Very cool stuff. |

Keeping the thread alive
Here's some pics I took today. I just insured it and got the temporary plate renewed. I may not get to keep the black plates. And the Roto leaks from the front seal. The motor is fresh, it was pinging until I put premium into it.

why wouldn't be able to keep the California black plates? I keep my black plates at all costs. My 62 catalina still has them and my 71 Hearse has them too, even though it costs me $268.00 a year to register the Hearse because of the commercial plates on it.

Black plates
T. Weber I am glad you asked. The lady at the Rancho Cucamonga DMV told me that since they were stamped 63 and that the car was out of their system for several years, I would need new plates. She said I could put them on a 1963, but not use them on this 1964. I informed her that these plates were the original plates, she didn't seem to care.
I wrote on the VIN form that I wanted to keep the original black plates, for car value. I'm hoping that the VIN inspector signs off and lets me keep them. I want to leave the DMV office with a sticker and not a set of plates that read 7xxxxxxx. I guess I'll just tell people that it is a model year 2007, if they give me the new plates. I bought this car for 500 bucks three years ago. It had been sitting for 9-10 years. I have paid all fees and did not even pay a non-op, even though I wouldn't move it and didn't insure it until this week. |

Marimba Red
It's as close to the factory specs for marimba red as PPG could get. Since paint is now base coat/clear coat they do what they can. I still like laquer finishes. Does anyone remember polish with grit?
The car was originally Alamo Biege. It's a fine color, but I didn't want it to look like I was driving a filing cabinet. I struggled with the originality department, but at some point you have to say to hell with the Pontiac snobs and I don't want to drive a filing cabinet. Alamo Biege is synomous with putty. The Chebbies had a different name for putty, but it has the same paint code. I stayed with the saddle carpet and kept the original white interior (seats and door panels from PUI). They provided the GP embossing on the rear arm rest. It was hard to paint over the wax pencil 274 that was on the firewall. This code was hand written by a UAW worker to inform the assembly line of the options, but we did. My favorite interior is the Pontiac tri-color. I wanted that. I still want that. Good luck, Greg |

Greg,
First I want to say Nice Grand Prix! The gal at the DMV has no idea what she is talking about! If you still get flack tell her you need to speek to a supervisor. You can also purchase the DMV Vehicle code book for about $5.00 from the DMV. I have fought with the California DMV many many times. You just have to be persistant and know wat to do. If you would like any help with the DMV feel free to email me at hearses@hotmail.com I've been down that DMV road too many times. Terry Weber |

Greg, thanks for the info. Originality is ok, but I build my cars for ME, not other people. Your car looks great that color. My 65 was repainted before I bought it last year. It's supposed to be burgundy, but it has a redish/brown tint to it. I hate it, but no problem because I am going to take it down to bare metal and redo the whole car. I like the marimba red, but in 64 there were two codes for that color. One is darker than the other, so I don't know which one get.
Tell the knuckleheads at DMV that your car has a 63 plate on it because GM used to introduce the new models in September. It used to be a big deal when the new cars came out in September, everyone used to wonder what the new models would look like. Now, it doesn't mean anything becasue all of the new cars look the same...and they all look like *****. If GM wants to start selling more cars they need to come out with some individuality between the makes and add some style and appeal to them like they were in the old days. The new soltice is a good example. I live in Delaware near the one and only GM plant that builds the soltice. They had to add a third shift becasue they can't keep up with the demand. Thanks for the info, Greg. Your car looks great that color, and put that tri-color interior in and make it the way you want it to be. Bob

Thanks for the posts
Terry and Bob,
Thanks again. I can send the paint code that was used on my car. I'll have to look at the slip, but I am happy with it. It needs to go back to the painter, for some 10 feet flubs. At some angles it looks like I paid 3K for and Earl Schieb. The sanding was the labor intensive part. As for the DMV, today was a positive step and I knew it was not my last. I have 1 more trip there for VIN verification. On an earlier trip there (I've had this thing for 3 years) a different person told me to include the black plate value part on the form. The plates are in good shape and useable. I'm keeping my options open on the original plates. My temp is good through July. Let me know if your going to the POCI in Ontario, CA. Take care, Greg |
