hood scoop color
Should the hood scoop insert be painted the same color as the hood? or should the inside of the hood scoop insert be painted black or the color of the car?
I have seen it both ways wondering what was the color it was painted from the factory. thanks |

I suppose it depends on the year and model. For example the 68-69 scoop (GTO and Firebird IIRC) was body color but the insert. was black.
And I believe the 70 Judge scoop body was black with black insert. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong please.

If this is for the 67 GTO you referenced in your other posts the insert is painted the car color from the factory; same for 65-67. The ones painted black were most likely replacements where it would be hard to match up the original color.

To clarify, the scoop is body color, the interior of the scoop should be flat black.

Scoops and scoop inserts were body color except for 1970-1971 Judge which had black scoop inserts.

Well it seems that there is a difference of opinion. So lets clarify On a 1967 GTO should the hood scoop insert (the finned part) be painted the color of the car or flat black. Can we all get on the same page here please.

The finned part WAS BLACK!
The outer part WAS BODY COLOR! |

Old Goat 67 is correct. A huge pet peeve of mine. You see beautiful restorations done and the painter paints the fins body color. It's not an easy item to mask off so the factory used a masking screen to do it. Here's an NOS one in primer with flat black fins.

This is absolutely correct for 65/66/67.
There is no doubt, and there is no difference of opinion for 65/66/67.

Since we're on this subject, and 70-71 Judge was mentioned, does the 72 have the inserts painted black too?

so you are saying the insert, finned part, should be flat black on a 1967 gto?

It's actually true for '65 through '70. Not sure about the '71/'72. Think of it this way..the finned area represents an opening. It is flat black to disappear...like an open hole. The only exception is some years of the Ram Air/Judge cars for which the entire inserts are painted black... Not entirely up on which ones...
Pet peeves of mine too. Screams repaint when you see the entire scoop interior body colored. Like l said, they're supposed to represent open holes.

My 65 GTO was repainted the first time in 1982. The car was Light Blue metallic. I told the shop to paint it Red.
The whole scoop was painted Red insert included. So IF I wanted to paint the insert Flat Black any ideas how to approach that task ? Currently running an open scoop. It was the thing to do ................... back then

My '67 is an original paint car, the scoop is body color with the fins flat black.
