I need to replace the rochester 4bbl carb on my 1972 Trans am. Does anybody have any suggestions on a good aftermarket carb approx. 800cfm to use as a replacement. Somthing that would not affect the clearance for the shacker scoop and would have a electric choke.

Tim,
If your T/A has its original 750cfm 7042270 or 273 carb, I would try to rescue it's performance. Throttle shaft bushings, & good Echlin kit will do wonders for a "worn-out" carb. If you have to have 800 cfm & an electric choke, I would go with a '77-79 Pontiac Q-jet & use the electic choke off of an '80 Pontiac Q-jet (M4ME). The choke mechanism is also available on Cadillacs & as an aftermarket conversion for 73+ integral choke Q-jets. You didn't mention whether your '72 was relatively stock or had a really wild engine in it. Hopefully Cliff R should be along soon. Cliff has a really good handle on tuning the mid to late 70's Q-jets for optimum performance.
