I'm next door to you in Wisconsin, I've had a few '69's, would like to get another one eventually. You want to find someone that will see your dad's project to fruition. Wish I was closer man, I'd help you get it at least partly back together... When you figure out what you want to do with it and what you all have there, shoot me a message...

There are lots of knowledgable Pontiac people in West Michigan. Someone will chime in that can come out and help you.

Sorry for your loss. My Dad has been gone for 19 years now.
This is a tough situation, but honestly you will do much better with the sale if the car was completed and running/driving. If you are able to finish the car or find someone who can that would be my advise. Assuming the car is a base motor automatic the ceiling on value is going to keep it under $30k even with exceptional bodywork and paint. You just don't see many of them selling for more than that unless they are Judges or Ram Air cars. In it's current state you will be lucky to get close to $15k for it as an unfinished project. Probably have to lower the price considerably from there to sell it as is. Just my opinion here, but reality I think in today's market. It would be a shame to fire sale it out for 20% of what your Dad has invested, but the majority of the guys looking to buy a car like this will be lowballing you from the start. Project cars are a tough sell. My advise would be to get the car finished in time for spring cruise nights and then advertise it heavily. Hopefully you will find the guy who wants this exact car with killer body and paint in Starlight Black and will pay up for the car and the work put into it. Cars can sometimes garner above market values if they are exceptional in appearance even if they are not a rare or special car. If you plan to sell it as is, then I would put it on PY, craigslist, and ebay with a lot of good pictures and description for at least 2 weeks before accepting any lower offers. Get the word out as much as possible to find the right guy to take over the project. |

Sorry for your loss.
If you have no interest in the car or the task of assembling it, here's what I would do. Clean the car inside and out. Clean the parts Gather all the parts, receipts, documentation, make sure the title is clear and transferable and make an inventory noting anything new or rebuilt. Push the car out in the sun and take a lot of pics it looks good Lay the parts out in the sun and again lots of pictures. Stick it on Ebay under cars for sale with a high reserve maybe 25k After the listing ends you'll have an idea what people will pay, ( it won't sell and your only out depending on the number of pics in the ad is less than 10 bucks) Then relist it with a buy it now maybe 25% higher and it should sell. This is just my opinion, Hope it helps,Bud |

I see your engine is as pulled condition. I assume the rest of the drive train is the same. I assume interior is also in need of "restoration".
With these facts in mind I would offer the following comments/info. 1) Assembling the car with "unrestored" or "rebuilt" components is a waste of time. 2) I assume you don't want to dump more money into this thing rebuilding drive train and having interior done. 3) looks if the engine has HEI dist (not original), wonder how much other stuff is not original. 4) looks as this is close to a base GTO with undesirable driveline. Auto, no ram air, Posi?, and its not original desirably optioned car I doubt that done it would not be a "high dollar" car. 5) Spending more money on rebuilding drive line and getting interior done and assembling car so its fully done (15k easy) isn't worth the return. 6) your best bet is to sell as is, its in a place that its easily changed/rebuilt to what a prospective buyer wants. For example buyer can easily change the drive line to his tastes. Switch to a 4 speed or even mod to a 5 speed. Have the engine rebuilt using a stroker crank to make it a 455. Whatever. I think this makes the car easier to sell. Advertise this fact, finish rebuild to buyers taste. I know the car is more interesting to me as it sits vs. if it was done. Most prospective buyers, especially in the rust belt love a finished body shell with just mechanical to do, 7) to get a idea on price get a knowledgeable GTO enthusiast to look over parts and put on price on them all, add it all up and do a ebay add as mentioned above. Do a good job of pictures and description and this will get you the best possible price. 10-15K looks like a good guess to me at this point. |

You'll either be selling it for cheap (I'm thinking 4 figures) or spending more to complete it than you'll get for selling it. (such is the restoration hobby.) You may just be "stuck" with it - which really isn't that bad. My condolences on your dad. I lost my mom this year - parents are always tough to lose.

I too live in mid Michigan about 30 minutes away from St. Charles (where car was painted)and can offer assistance if desired to help sort things out. You could also contact Scott Tiemann over in Portland, Michigan (South west Michigan) at Super Car Specialities who is a Pontiac specialist. He is VERY well know in the Pontiac community. Perhaps he knows of someone with interest for he is knee deep in our hobby with classic Pontiacs. A lot of people stay in touch with Scott to keep an eye out for "this or that". Let me know if I can be of any further help, PM me would be best and I will PM you with my contact information so check your inbox when you get a free moment.

For those just finding this thread or interested in this car.
I looked at it, last Sunday 3-16-14. Very sad story not only about the current owners Dad dying but how he got taken on a very poor restoration. The owner has receipts, he says showing 50k spent at a restoration shop...I have seen better amateur jobs. I was shocked to see the poor quality of everything, even through the heavy layer of dust I could see 80 grit sand scratches. Areas that should be a seam of 2 panels meeting are bondo'd over. A new floor was welded in, not to bad of a job. The firewall was replaced converting from a/c to non ac, this was a hack job at best. They painted the firewall gloss black which really makes their grind marks and hammer blows very obvious. I found bubbling in the paint...which means rust that wasn't repaired properly. Both quarters are patch panels. There is very little in the way of new parts. Most of the old stuff is there but all needs replacing. The trim tag appears to be DA'd over and has a heavy coat of paint, not legible, vin is in place. The car has probably one of the worst pitted frames I have ever seen. The list goes on. VERY hard to put a value on this car, it's not a Judge or anything special, it is not a car with $50k of real professional restoration. The owner seems naive to what he has. I am just trying to save someone a trip if they think there going to get a high dollar car for little money. Even if the car was given to you. You rebuilt the drivetrain, bought and did and the interior, bought all the tires, exhaust, everything to make the car driveable you would be upside down on the value and then you have a car with bad body work. I have been on way too goose chase's, saving some one the time and money. This is the harsh reality in my opinion. Someone else might be happy with this. |
