I'm running some old Hedmann flat collector 2" primary round port headers on my 65. Can install them with the motor in the car in like 20 minutes. Best fitting set of headers I've ever owned. Prior to that, I had a set of old Indian Adventures headers that were 1 7/8" that we also slip fit and easy to install.

Using the Hedman hustler 2" that has a flat collector as well. Been using the same set for 25 years and they work great.

The short answer is the Doug's round port bolts are easier to get to that the D-port header bolts - especially the infamous fourth bolt back. Best to have the cherry picker hooked up with the engine mount through-bolts out so you can raise the engine about 3" to make it easier to work around the steering shaft. Also make sure you start with #4 bolt.

On driver's side, install the #4 bolt into the head, then use the "keyhole" slot on the header to get it into place. Then get the # 1 & 6 bolts installed. I cut a notch in the bottom of the header gasket at #4, so I could drop the gasket in from the top. Get the rest of the bolts started, then tighten #4 first (to keep it from getting pinched by the primary tube.
I also pre-fit the headers on an engine on a stand. I tweak the headers until I can easily get a wrench on each bolt, and have a decent range of wrench motion. I put a set of Tribal Tubes on a '67 earlier this year, and there was no way to get the driver's side #4, other than using the keyhole. Well, maybe if I pulled the steering shaft...

Both my sets of Tribal Tubes , the cheap OBX I bought and even the new GP stainless I got the outer bolt holes on both sides were too tight and had to get the die grinder out . So yes fit before you are fighting the fit from underneath when they will never bolt up!
And also make sure mount mounts will slide on frame mounts and are not too tight!! Ask me how I know!

FYI - Ram Air Restorations has a larger diameter round port set for'64-'67 GTOs (RM-4-OSA Round Port Ram Air/HO/SD Style Factory Headers - Oversized).
I ordered a set in June of 2019 (yes 2019). I do not have them yet as there has been some foundry problems. It looks like they have one side and the other side is expected by end of Oct 2020. Fortunately I'm still working on my chassis with the body off. Search this forum for some feedback on mounting these on the '67. Some say there might be a frame interference. I cannot say, since I do not have them yet. Hope this helps. |

Doug's D567 on a '65 chassis. Sorry, no steering shaft installed where you can see that clearance. I did have to move the inner arm on the Z-bar for clearance, but High-Ports have the exhaust flange moved, so not sure if that will be necessary with E-heads. I will also have to move the grease zerk on the Z-bar tube for access.

As was posted above, a dream to install in just a few minutes. I believe Hedman Headers purchased the JR headers design when JR Headers disappeared. VERY VERY HIGH QUALITY HEADERS BY JR HEADERS. I did have to rework my Z-Bar so that ut would clear on of the tubes. Only mod I made on the system. For sure a 20 minute set of headers to put on the engine in the car. Milt S saw my headers and later copied the JR design for the Sherman 64 GTO (WANGERS GTO). Now TENNY'S GTO. They never leaked by the engine or at the collector once you put some street time on the parts and the carbo dust sealed the tubes. Tom V.

What kind of mods did you have to make to the Z-Bar?

Almost got the work to the '67 GTO done. Waiting on some Tri Y headers from Tribal Tubes. Coming together and looks good. I bought the Dougs Headees but they hit at multiple spots so I sent them back, spoke to the guys at Tribal Tubes and decided to order them.

I've had the fortunate/unfortunate experience of R&R both Dougs and 2.5" RARE on D port heads on a '65 gto. It sucks, but is doable.
With RAREs, you can install/pull the engine with them on. You can't with Dougs. Installing the RARE on driverside with the engine in the car required removing the starter and z-bar and going from underneath. Re-torquing RAREs after the initial startup was challenging on driverside. One of those bolts is hard to reach. You need a selection of mini box ends, open-ended wrenches, and tiny ratchet w/socket. You can buy 5/16", 3/8" and 7/16" head exhaust manifold bolts. The smaller head allows for easier box-end wrench work, but they are harder to turn with your fingers vs. big head. Can anyone recommend a stud and bolt kit that works with RARE and/or Dougs?

I put some new brand x??? headers on my 69 GTO. Had to modify a wrench to get one bolt tight. What a major PITA!!!

If you think getting headers on a GTO try a Firebird after doing it 5 times ,I opted for Ram Air manifolds, last time I put the d--m things on ,I decided that there was not going to be a 6th time t ihat included jacking one side of the engine up ,removing the inner fender well ,the clutch stuff starter, brake brackets, never again!!
