Default How to determine value of inherited 69 GTO

My dad died earlier this year and I am just now getting to cleaning up his garage. I cannot figure out how to determine the value of his GTO.

I have tried calling different GTO related places locally and the shop that did all this GTO's work but all are out of business.

I remember he bought the GTO used and sent it off to have the body professionally restored.

................he spent $54,000 on the body alone.

I now have a 100% mint shell of the GTO, the only thing installed is door windows and tires.
All of the cars parts are in the garage but none in the car itself.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for selling or at least getting an appraisal on the car?

Pictures are attached, sorry the pics are dusty I just pulled the cover off and took the pictures.

Sorry for your loss. Where are you located? Try and find a GTO or Pontiac club that may be able to help you.

Not sure if it it close to you or not but I Googled this:
http://jmkclassiccars.net/southfield...al-service.htm

Might be a good place to start but I have no experience with them.

I would recommend getting the car reassembled, but I realize that might not be something you care to deal with.
It's definately not going to command as much value in the current state.
If this is a 'true' Starlight Black GTO, it will boost the value (of a completed car) somewhat. Check for PAINT code 10 on the body tag.

I'm sure there is a base of folks that would be happy to take on the project, having foresight of what it will be when it's finished.

do you know what engine it came with. I would suggest spending the 65.00 and getting a copy of the phs sheet so you will know what it originally came with. (your dad probably already has this somewhere if he was willing to spend that kind of money on it)

Putting the car back together will make a huge difference in value. As noted if you can't find the PHS documentation by all means acquire it.

I PM'ed him a couple of hours ago with the exact same advise, with some details regarding available engines and increased value. He responded and intends to do his research.

He should be able to help you assign a value.

This stands for Pontiac Historical Service, in case the original poster is unfamiliar with the Pontiac hobby.

Might help him to know what to search for when going through his dad's paperwork.

Thanks for all the replies and help.

I know the car was originally green.

From what I remember he had it painted black because aftermarket parts he wanted were not available in green(dash parts I think).

In the pictures you can see all the wiring harnesses and what not on the walls.

I do plenty of work on some of my own cars but taking a car I am not interested in or know anything about from a shell to finished is something I am not interested in.

There is nothing but a shell, not one thing bolted to it.

Looks like it's a base automatic car, so probably a YS block but it would help to know if it was an HO car. There's a lot of information anyone trying to place a value on the car would need to know, such as if the engine has the VIN stamped on it, what options it came with, etc. The scoops appear to be sealed, it's clear from the trans hump it was an auto trans car, you can see the hole for the cable shifter, so just guessing that even if it's got a numbers-matching driveline, even assembled it's not going to approach $50K. The market is not that great on a base automatic '69, even one that is restored. All apart like that you would be hard pressed to get 25K. All together the car might fetch in the high 20's/low 30's depending on the options and if it's an HO car or a base YS 400... There are some REALLY nice 1969 automatic GTO's out there and the prices are suprisingly low. The PHS suggestion is excellent, however you still are going to have to try to determine what you have there versus what the PHS says it came with new. PHS isn't going to tell us what motor you have there, what head castings, etc. We can tell you a lot if you can provide info like what numbers you see on the engine block, cylinder heads, transmission tag, body tag, etc...

All the work was originally done by
Randy Church Restorations from St. Charles, MI. if that means anything.

Thanks alot, I will get all the numbers from everything and a PHS.
I know the car was a automatic because my dad was handicapped and could not drive a manual.

I can get numbers from everything and take pictures because it is all sitting on the ground next to the car (engine, trans).

And since I have '68's on the brain, I forgot that they didn't make the HO option in '69, there was the base 400 and the Ram Air III and you have sealed scoops, I would suspect the engine is a YS base 400-4, but it also could be a 400 2-BBL, which would not be good for value...

Get us the 2-letter code on the front of the engine block under the passenger-side cylinder head and the casting numbers on the heads themselves, look near the two center exhaust ports. Look for "16" or "48"

Will do, I am sure its nothing special he was just recreating a car he had back in the day.

I just want to get it sold to someone who really wants it, I need the shop space.

It sits in a climate controlled garage and has been taking up valuable space for the last 10 years.
