The 4.1 was only a few years because it was plain and simple a POS. There were 8 head gasket revisions by 1982 because along with poor QC, the area between the cylinders was so thin that it was very difficult to keep the seal between cylinders and they were also notorious for external oil, and coolant leaks.

1980-84 and the high cost for warranty repairs it was cut, 125 HP didn't make it the answer to replace a V8 as buick hoped it would.

I worked at a buick dealer in 1982-84 I wish I had a dollar for every set of head gaskets I replaced on a 4.1. Some cars had 4-5 sets of HG replaced under warranty.
