Talking exhaust manifolds for a yak 400 in a 78 GP

Swapping out a 301 for a 400. Need exhaust manifolds for the 400. Anyone got a set?

Thanks,
Dave

I should have some, do you want the 2 or 3 bolt flange style? 2 bolt is 60's-early/mid 70's 3 bolt mid 70's-late 70's

If factory it's probablly the 3 bolt, but you better check.

301 manifolds will bolt right up. They have an extra hole but the gasket covers that.

No pictures but check around, I know a bit about the lowly 301. Also I ran non 301 logs on my 301 in the infamous T1000 with no issues, been there, done that.

Anyway , no exhaust is going to bolt right up to your existing exhaust using either 301 or standard (400) logs. This is due to the deck height difference between the 301 and the 400, the manifold sits approx. 3/4" higher and 3/4" further out.

Here is a pic showing the difference between the 301 manifold and one for a 350/400:
The rusty manifold is the 301, the painted one is a 350/400

Stock 301 manifolds. 3 bolt. In the future he is going to get the exhaust to true dual, but I lack the time and a lift to do it at the house.

You may be able to wiggle the stock exhaust up into place but it will choke the motor.

Not what you want to hear but by the time something gets rigged up that time and effort would get you half way to a true set of duals.

Like 3 days after the engine is in, he has a family member that owns a exhaust shop They are gonna do true duals.

Starter??? Can I use the 301???

Dave

The starter will work but it is a smaller lite duty unit. If the engine is mild it should last a while as long as the starter was in good shape to begin with.

If he plans on upgrading the engine (compression/cam etc.) in the future he will also need to upgrade the starter a that time.

Make sure the exhaust guy knows to leave room for a larger starter!!
