Saw the car today, nice nice car. All original paint , interior, under hood has light cosmoline, power antennae not working, new tires {with 4300 mile original dry rooted included} What got me more then anything else was the quality of the GM original paint. I guess they weren't lying when they said GM massed produced these cars. Paint was so so factory.

That is a beautiful example of an original 1978 Grand Prix. Your post sounded like you may have been a bit disappointed with it? Keep us posted.

The guy had an original paint 70 Nova with 2999 miles, bad original paint, and 75 Olds Con, with ok original paint, an 75 grand prix with 10000 miles good original paint. I guess what really disappointed me is the quality of factory original paint on these GM cars. Were making a deal on the GP iregardless. I couldn't believe the factory flaws would pass inspection as is. Didn't anybody care back then?

Made the deal. The color, miles, and every last piece of paperwork sealed the deal. I don't think I'll ever find a better one. I guess im becoming a collector of original paint cars, flaws and all

Congratulations on a great acquisition. Hope to see it around. There's going to be a great contingent of GP's at the POCI convention in Loiusville this yar.

Very nice car. I'd love to find a red SJ in that condition.

Glad to hear it, and we know it is going to be preserved.

I had a 1979 LJ with Pontiac wires, T tops, and leather interior . Paid 2k for it in 1992, drove it every day. Needless to say, when I traded it for bodywork on a 86 Mustang GT conv, it wasn't worth that much. This one will hardly be driven. Cant believe how nobody saved these cars.Used to have a triple black t top 77 SJ with 29k miles back in the late 80's. Everyone saved those. This 78 SJ has a body style that nobody appreciates. But what the hell, FOR 15,500 bucks {not 18900 firm like he advertised} I like it! Car was originaly from South Hills Pontiac in pittsburg PA. ANYBODY know of one with lower miles{4300}? Im gonna be liking this car more then the 78 TA I picked up a few months ago!

Scott,

I think they are finally starting to get some recognition, but they were overshadowed by Trans Am mania at the time. I worked at the Parts Dept. of our local Pontiac dealer from Aug. of 1976 to Aug. of 1978 and even in my small town, T/As were the car to have. Couple that with poor build and materials quality, less than exciting engine options, and many were just driven to the end of their usefulness and scrapped.

Personally, I like the 78-80 Grand Prixes (a friend had a Black 80 GP with a tan velour interior and T-tops in the early 80s, I've always wanted a duplicate of that car), and the 78-80 Grand Ams but I think for most people (especially of a certain age) looking to recapture a piece of their youth, and the fact these cars are affordable, handle and brake better and are more fuel efficient, is starting to make them more popular.

Agreed completely. Would love to find a nice red/red SJ with Buckets and put my 4spd setup in and maybe a mild 455.

does anyone feel that this car is worth 15500? All my car buddies feel its all the money and then some. Deal is not totally final, so don't be afraid to "hurt my feelings'

Seems kinda high for what it is. The late 70's cars haven't really 'arrived'. Most will just overlook it as an 'old' car.

That said it isn't like there is a bunch of these cars around in that condition.

Im thinking 13-13.5 is all the money, fair for both buyer and seller. Cars original paint is not 'pristine' when seen in person. Im sticking at that price.

[QUOTE=red1975pacer;5350223]Thanks guys , I kind of figured it was an "acquired taste". you know what I like most about this forum? it puts "regular car guys' {like myself} in contact with those more experienced buyers and sellers. Knowledge is key!

IMHO, since you're not buying it to resell, and plan on maintaining it in it's current state, the GP will eventually become worth what you have in it. Like them or not, there are not many left in this condition. Obviously, the higher the initial investment, the longer it may take for the car's value to catch up to the investment. And, sticking to $13-13.5K narrows the gap considerably. Couple that with there not being too many people willing to pay top dollar for a late 70s GP, and there is a chance the seller might realize cash in hand is better than the possibility of cash.
