mint turquoise paint
I had a local shop call sherwin williams and get the paint formula for 70 mint turquoise. BC/CC.When we replaced the rear 1/4s we found some untouched original paint under some weather stripping. The sherwin williams paint came out too green for my taste and comparing to my sample and most mint turquoise cars online i see it came out too green. Going to repaint and would like to have a formula from somewhere that is correct. Im not sure if the sample I have is big enough and flat for a computer to read. Any idea who i could contact? I see someone mentioned scott tiemann? If he has sprayed that color before. Also Ive seen chevelles and buicks, etc. painted in the exact color but by a different name.

Had the same problem with my 68 Meridian Turquoise GTO. Had it photoscaned by SW, and it came up Nissan Turquoise I finally had a good paint guy just open up a can of code K Pontiac paint , and it was a perfect match. Now I realize some paints have a few {2 or 3} variables, but not all do..Just make sure you get the right year paint. Good luck |

It's close but original is definitely more blue looking.

No other paint mixers in the area to match the paint?
As you can see, this looks totally different when scanned.

Now I certainly don't claim to be a paint expert, but these turquoise paint shades seem to be totally different unless properly mixed and applied.. The can shades seem to be way off. Kinda reminds me of "voodoo green". |

The shop mixed the paint by Sherwin Williams formula and after painting I mentioned about being too green and he said he'd probably of been better off just mixing from scratch to match my sample...I don't know anything about mixing paint but I would think it would be hard to match the sample by just winging it. Since the car will get painted again... I'll stop by his shop and see what he wants to do for a better match. I was just figuring the amount of mint turquoise gtos, and the Buicks and Chevelle s that have the exact same paint I've seen on the web that someone has a correct mixing formula for the code 34 paint.

I’m pretty sure now they can scan your paint and get an exact match so I don’t think there is any guesswork involved

Scanning doesn't seem to work on these shades. We opened up a 68 PPG and it was an exact match. Now one thing I do remember is that every yet was slightly tinted differently. In other words 69 Chrystal Turquoise was different then the same code k 68 Merridian turquoise.Im sure your mint turquoise must have varied year to year also |

I've tried matching a 68 GM color recently which is a turquoise color with Dupont paint. I was told that they do not have the correct colors and flake sizes needed to match all the old colors. Not sure how true that is. They did photo scan the color I had. The closest match they could come up with did not have a high enough rating to match.

I went to my local Napa that carries PPG and mixes their own. Told them ppg 2168 is 70 mint turquoise and they confirmed. Mixed up a sample of ppg deltron and their cheaper Omni line. I compared both to a little of the Sherwin Williams left over. All 3 looked pretty much identical next to each other. They said they could put my original metal/ paint in the scanner so next time up over there I will try that. Their paint is very close to the original... just a little too green and not enough blue. The only reason I'm fussing is because this color is not what I would of picked back in the day but it's not bad. Mint turquoise is the second rarest color in the 70 color lineup at 700+ cars being painted in code 34. If I'm going with this color I want it to be pretty much dead on. Looking at bop cars in this color online ,there are quite a few different shades of this color among the cars claiming mint turquoise or whatever else Chevy,Buick and olds were calling their code 34 paint. All I really have to go on is my original samples. Or just go with whatever the paint mixing people hand me. Their deltron paint is 200.00/quart and the Omni line was like 56.00 per quart.

The BEST a digital paint scanner (prophet) can do - or hope for - is a blendable match.
And they miss by a much wider margin than they match. Have seen very very limited acceptable success with these gadgets. Light to Medium shades of metallic colors multiply the problems. The very best and most reliable way to match colors in this arena is to find a store that sells Sikkens / Akzo Nobel automotive paint. They have what is called a Color Map Catalog. Actual paint spray samples, not dyes or approximates, and what you pick is what comes in the can. Each color sample has a hole in the middle to help gauge your selection against your sample. Over the past 20+ years this "old-tech" source has been light years ahead of any new tech in actual results. They also have a Glamour Color Catalog - same format of actual sprayed colors. But most of these colors have coarser metallics. Your original color likely had fine or medium metallic flake. |
