Funny, they played both 'The Life of Brian' and 'History of the World, Part 1' back-to-back about two weeks ago on BBC channel. Haven't watched or even thought about either in 25 years or so....very funny stuff.
RIP.

I was always a huge fan of Monty Python. While its true that virtually nothing was sacred to them - they were the absolute masters of detail in their movies. You have to watch them multiple times to catch everything. Meaning of Life and Life of Brian are great examples, you have to watch the background on purpose to catch it all. The subtlety of the background work is unparalleled in modern movie making. In one scene a guy mentions to his family that he lost his job at the mill and that he has to sell all of the children for medical experiments. Many scenes later, there's one of Heaven, and in the background you can barely make out the man's kids. That is the mastery they had over their craft.

You are right though. I recently watched a great BBC miniseries from the 1990s.."Ivanhoe". Great film with a very high production quality. It occurred to me while watching it that the Monty Python films had the same production quality.

Bring out your dead! Bring out your dead! In the background a guy is swinging a cat into a wall...meow, meow
