WFO Drop Base Generation II..
For Trans Ams, the use of High Rise intakes has always caused problems being able to mounth the air cleaner and shaker.
The WFO drop base was the solution, but it was somewhat restrictive with air-flow for high HP applications. It did offer enough space for a Performer RPM or a Holley Street Dominator. WFO Generation 2 offers about an inch more hood space and a lot more airflow. Has anyone managed to use the Gen 2 with a more aggressive intake?

Larry Navarro had them made for quite a few years.
Larry was a strong contributor here on PY for many years.

“Gen 2” is actually the Pro-Touring F-Body air cleaner setup. Dave from PTFB sells them. It has no association with the WFO.

Hey guys, it's been awhile since I've posted any information on PY. My automotive hobby had taken a "back seat" while I was racing vintage motocross over the last 10 years. My motocross days are over since a bad crash last September.
Now back to the subject post...... There is NO "WFO GEN 2". The "GEN2" that is referred to is another product offered by PTFB (Pro-Touring F Body), which has no affiliation with WFO. I offer two WFO units, the WFO-1 (77-79) and the WFO-2(73-76'). The assemblies are distributed through Butler. I produce all of the products for them to retail. My units do not use the "porous" oil/gauze filter media as it has been proven to pass micro-particles of dirt. That particular filter is designed for extremely dirty conditions where the caked-on dirt is actually works "in harmony" with the gauze filter media. The filter companies have cleverly devised a marketing plan to increase sales to "street" enthusiasts. The filters are designed to "stay dirty" for best filtering so cleaning the filter negates what they are designed to accomplish. If you have doubts, the company who originally produced the filter as far back as the late 60's for muddy/off-road use. It was the answer to the "paper" media which we all know that when wet, the paper disintegrates which leaves no protection to the intake system. Any questions just ask me, I'll be more than happy to explain in further detail. I've been building the WFO for nearly 15 years and I'd like to say thank you to all those who purchase and use and trust in my product.

Fitment With Formula Hood
I am not trying to hijack the original post but will any of these drop base options fit under a stock 70-75 Formula hood? I currently run a stock intake but HSD is close in height as others are. Any information is appreciated.

I raced 1979 YZ250 & 1981 YZ465. Sold the 465 but now the 250 is in parts for garage art restoration. I bought a brand new '79 YZ250 in high school. I just had to have another for old time sake.

Soooo, now that we have the complete history of Pontiac drop base air cleaners, does anyone have any measurements on the total drop?
I know the GenII From Butler gave an additional 1 inch drop vs the WFO1, and a lot more room for airflow. I'm running a HSD with a 1 inch spacer, and a 1 inch air-cleaner spacer on top of that. So if anyone knows of a high rise spreadbore intake with enough "meat" to seal up on ported Edelbrock heads (320 CFM, ported by Kauffman, that would be awesome. I've got 2 inches above the height of a Holley Street Dominator to work with.

Your Holley intake should work with a stock air cleaner. The Holley Street Dominator has been measured 0.25” taller than stock. That’s not enough to require a whole new air cleaner.

My shaker (76 TA) lifted about and inch and a quarter when I changed to a Performer RPM. The WFO-2 dropped it back down about an inch so the shaker sits higher than stock and I had to remove the large rubber gasket, but its been fine. I contacted Butler who said the GenII gives about an additional 0.25 inch drop vs the WFO-2.

Here is the PTFB Gen II on my 81 T/A (400 Pontiac) on top of a TK II intake. I have just over 1" of spacers between the carb and air-cleaner in order to get the shaker up and out. At some point I will probably install the Crosswind I got from Ken (Ace) Brewer years ago to see if it fits better and perhaps perform better...

I'm asking what intakes people are using while taking advantage of hood clearance provided by various options.

Steve hooked me up with the HSD because we had similar port work done, and having enough "meat" on the intake to seal up ported Bedrock heads is the 2nd hurdle I've got to clear. I'd already be running a Northwind, except that Kauffman only has square-bore options and I want to keep my Q-Jet.

For the aftermarket, I’ve had the old PTFB, new PTFB and tried the WFO 10 years ago. I’ve been through all of them on the market except for the one from Blockers. You will have to drill a hole in these “drop base” air cleaners for the Pontiac quadrajet vent tube and possibly need to change to a crappy banjo fuel fitting if you go this route. |
