Default Date codes under hood.

Delco-Remy products “did not” use the letter “I” in their date codes.
Carter was the same, no “I” in their date codes.

The letter “I” was used in date codes on all other components.

Engine Block (I 14 4) = Sept. 14, 1964
Intake Manifold (I 15 4) = Sept. 15, 1964
LH Cylinder Head (I 11 4) = Sept. 11, 1964
RH Cylinder Head (I 17 4) = Sept. 17, 1964

Thanks Chris, great detail. Amazing how Gunk works but leaves remnants of the OK 5 stamp. Did you re-gasket much? Wish I would have been forward thinking like you and kept hoses and other items we all just ignored back in the day. again thanks for taking the time to do this, very helpful.

Was the headliner color an optional selection or was that standard for this color combo?

Kevin,

I was happy to still be able to see the Black OK-5 stamp on the cyl. head.

If I found a soft OEM heater hose in a wrecking yard, I’d pull it. It paid off 40 years later.

Gaskets were replaced on the valve covers. Previous Owner/Mechanic switched the covers around, plus I wanted to see how clean it was inside. Just fresh oil everywhere.

I replaced the gasket on the rebuilt Original water pump also.

The Med. Slate headliner only came with the Black interior.

Thanks, Chris.

Default In a Rush ......

I’m not sure how this task was done at the Assembly Plant.

Probably a type of cover was laid over the chrome valve covers, then the engine paint was sprayed on.
The starter wire clip on 65-67 would be in place when the valve cover bolt was installed, and likewise for the oil dip stick tube.

Typically you will see some excess paint on the chrome in these areas, but I’ve never seen one this bad.

You can see how the paint ran down the backside of the clip.

Chris.

Default BRACKET, Heater Water Hose.

My records show in 1965 the “plated” bracket that supports the long heater hose on “non-air condition cars” as shown in post 72 was about a half year style.

Seems about (Dec. 64 - Jan. 65) in most plants the change was made from the plated bracket to the black painted bracket. Obviously a cheaper design.

My plated bracket shows several places of blue engine paint on the backside where it was pressed against the cylinder head.

Bill,

With this car, yes (r and r).

You couldn’t see this bolt, or the blue paint on the front of the engine when I received the car.

The degrease process with Gunk revealed the OK-5 along with that blue bolt.

Hi Chris.. Would you mind showing some good trunk pictures? Especially where the spatter paint starts and stops towards the rear area and behind the back seat area.

THANK YOU SIR!!!!!

Default Trunk, spatter paint

Hi Bill,

Hope these photos are helpful.

The spatter paint wasn’t a precise application as seen in this Baltimore built car.

It looks pretty nice for the most part, but I’m not sure what was done at the (rear end panel, both braces and the strike anchor)?

These areas were painted with a brush in a dark gray color.
Extremely sloppy job and I’m not sure of its purpose??

Chris.

Gray paint seemed to be applied above the spatter in these areas.

You can see where some of the spatter went onto the exterior painted lip above antenna.

Default HIGH FIDELITY

GTO quality sound system, LOL.

I’m too damn old for crawling around in a trunk compartment!

So, I pulled the rear seat speaker cover off the magnet to see the part number and date code.
It’s the same date as the front speaker, 40th week of 1964.

Happy New Year everyone.

Chris.

About Us

The PY Online Forums is the largest online gathering of Pontiac enthusiasts anywhere in the world. Founded in 1991, it was also the first online forum for people to gather and talk about their Pontiacs. Since then, it has become the mecca of Pontiac technical data and knowledge that no other place can surpass.
