Stamped 46 Heads
Doing a basic garage cleanout and I've come across a set of heads stamped 46 from a 1968 Catalina 428. A few friends told me, without any specifics, that these heads are desirable ones to use in a buildout of a 400 or larger block. I know nothing about these, so I'd like to know if anyone on here knows if these are worth keeping, or would they just serve as boat anchors?

A friend has these on his '65. We were thinking about swapping them out for a set of 670's he has. This thread may or may not change our mind. |

They are 10 to 1 CR, but small valve.

Were they used on '68 or perhaps '69 GTO's? Perhaps on 2bbl GTO models?

They were 1969 heads.
Then they made some in 73/74 also. (still small valve but lower cr) May have to check the date on them to be sure? None were used on GTO's, mostly big car heads in 69.

Looks like the 670's are going to go to good use. Thanks

Actually Johntal, you are probably correct; it may have been a 1969 Catalina. The guy I got them from many moons ago threw them in when I bought a car from him. It had the 428 motor in it with stamped 64 H.O. heads on it from a 455. The motor was in a 1964 goat and with the cam, forged pistons, MSD ignition, etc. it ran like a scalded dog.
Even though they are small valved, with the 10:1 compression would it be worth it to redo the heads with larger valves? I have no idea as to what all is involved, but I'll bet someone on this board does.

I'm sure steve25 would know.
Probably not hard to put bigger valves in it. Possibly just 2.11" intake may be enough.

Used on '69 400 and 428 engines, not used on the GTO.
Outer exhaust bolt holes are not drilled and tapped, press-in studs, 45-degree intake and exhaust valve seats. Very nice head to upgrade to big valves/screw-in studs. Really excellent 350 head choice.

Thanks, b-man. Maybe I'll hang on to these boys for the day that I decide to build out another poncho block or hand them off to someone who will.

Okay, I've held onto them long enough. Part of me would like to play around with them, but as old as I'm getting I decided to get in the parts disposal business, as my kids will have no idea of the value of some of my extra parts if I should croak. They would probably just toss things that I know to be good, desirable, rare or just plain interesting. I'll post them over in the For Sale section.
