Default OHC Six Drag Cars ?

I recently discovered this article about Bill Knafel, which mentioned an OHC Lemans that won races & set a couple of national records.

http://www.pontiacpreservationassoci...ll-knafel.html

So, do any of you guys know of any other competitive Stock or SS class OHC cars ? If so, any pics or links to that info would be appreciated.

1951 Anglia sedan called Hole Shot 6:

https://www.pinterest.com/mrbigblues...d-1951-anglia/

11 second fuel injected Pontiac OHC 6.

When I was a kid there was a local oval track racer that ran the sportsman class at the local speedway. Rules said inline 6 or 8 could be OHV or OHC, V8 could only be a flathead. Ford flatheads and 292 chev truck 6 cylinders were most common, one guy had a 300 inch ford 6 and two guys were running Pontiac OHC 6s. They had moderate success with the OHC 6s but they had to use 292 cranks to get the cubic inches near the same.

I believe member on PY (Jeff Hamlin) also built a OHC 6 with a 292 crank, somewhere around 300 CU. In if I recall correctly.

Thumbs up Very few known...

... Most know of The Tin Indian Team of Knafel Pontiac and that they were fortunate to work closely with PMD and in 1966 were given two OHC models to test and tune.
A hardtop and a convertible. They ran these cars hard, set records and when the smoke cleared both were returned to PMD never to be seen again :-(

The Firebird I have no info on.

Also wrong Jeff, it wasn't I who built the Stroker.

When you get to be just shy of 67 you do have lapses in memory, called CRS..... Somebody made a stroker OHC on this site, I saw it on their signature...… It just wasn't you...……….LOL

CammerJeff is who had a stroker, correct?

I've never done one, CammerJeff has built one so he would be the one to ask BTW, I checked his signature and it says 301 Cu.In on his signature.

I did find an inline forum that gives the basics of putting an 292 crank in a OHC 6.

http://www.inliners.org/ubbthreads/u...t&Number=67333

And another forum.

And another.

THANKS for the info & pics !!!

The article I linked mentioned just one OHC Lemans. But, knowing that there was 2, and that 1 was a 'vert, explains why there was both an I/S & J/S national record set.

Great info !

Thumbs up Tom Langdon's HOLE SHOT 6

That's one of several of my Pinterest OHC pages.

If anyone is interested it was featured in the two Car mags shown below.
Cheers.

We also ran an OHC Sprint in '66, through Royal.

Ours ended up with a homemade tripower, dual exhaust and other typical hot rod mods, and we were able to make some 12 second passes with it.

So, what was the best ET, in Stock legal form ?

With a Tri-power, I reckin you had to run Modified Production, or did you actually even try to run in a competitive class with it.

What is the quickest ET ever known to be made by a Stock legal OHC car ?

Any run Super Stock ?

Quickest pass in any form or class ?

Just noticed that the "Hole Shot 6" car was an NHRA national record holder ! I assume it was in either I/Gas or H/Gas class.

The only real quick straight six car I remember seeing was a 1st gen Camaro. The guy's name was Glen Self. It ran in the Modified Production class. Name of the car was "Stormin Six". He set lots of Nat records & won lots of big races. I know this is not Pontiac related. But a really quick inline six is interesting. And a guy who can build one to set records & win races deserves recognition.

Is this one of the strokers mentioned ?

https://bangshift.com/bangshiftapex/...c-pontiac-six/

Here's a 500hp stroker.

http://www.geocities.ws/ohcjhatch/ohc.htm

How about 2 cams, & a couple of V6 heads welded together.

Cool The missing ALTERED project...

...Sort of related. This was a scout troop project that was featured in a four part series in Hot Rod mag but then near completion it just went away with further detail on end results and/or what happened to this project. Who knows could still be sitting in the back corner of an old shop/garage

Sorry about the late response but I have been having trouble logging in for the last 2-3 weeks, but it seems to be cleared up now.

Yes I built a 301 OHC-6 Pontiac back in the late 1990's. It is in a mostly stock appearing 1969 Firebird. It ran a best of 13.22 at 103 mph at Detroit Dragway in 2001. Sorth Spec's on the car are a GMC 292 crank (modified with the counterweights ground amd rebalanced, Bored 1968 250 OHC-6 block (internally cleananced to accept the stroker crank), 68 1bbl head Ported and modified to accept Chevy LS Valve springs, Stock 4bbl intake, H-cam, Clifford Long Tube headers, Duel Exhaust with H-pipe, HEI ignition, Eagle H-beam rods for a Toyota Supra, custom ross pistons for a 9.2 CR. It Dynoed at 358 HP 4600 rpm and 406 ft lbs 1800rpm.
WC T5, 4.11 Chevy 12 Bolt. The car weighs 3368 lbs with 1/2 gas and no driver.

I would caution against anyone building one, it took me over 3 years to overcome all the issues, and I had access to a full machine shop at the time or it would not have been possible. If I actually had to pay someone for all the work that was done myself, or traded for with time or parts swaps I would imagine it would cost at least $10,000 in parts & Labor. As it was I spent over $3500 in parts alone. I think it would be easier to build a turbo or supercharged version.

My engine actually needs more Cam & a custom intake to really take full advantage of the conversion. As it is it launches very hard, but it is really all done at 4500 rpm, it will rev higher but very slowly and not really gain any HP.

I had alot of help from some very experianced people, including the driver of the Hole Shot 6 Fiat. He made the custom HEI for me.

I can go into alot more detail about all the issues encountered and how we overcame them if anyone is interested.

The Car was really built to beat my then coworkers 1988 5.0 Mustang LX that in stock for ran 15.20, my car with its slightly modified 250 OHC-6 ran 14.5 at the time, he built the Mustang until it ran high 13's & said I would never beat that time with my "boat anchor" needless to say he was wrong. But it was about 10X more work than I envisioned.

It is for sale if anyone is interested.
