Default 67 Lemans evap box delete?

My car has a lot of rust where water ran down the cowl, past the AC core and onto the pass side floor. I pulled the evaporator box and kick panel to fix the damage. Is there a block-off plate available to block the hole on the firewall where the AC core would go?

What did the non-AC cars have there?

I'm not aware of any plates for the large Evop box area,
just the blower box and heater core plate are what most vendors offer.

You will need to fab your own plate(s)

None AC shown below

You'll have to fabricate a plate for the firewall AND also a plate to cover the kick panel hole inside the car or you'll have a hurricane of wind coming through there when the car is moving. You can't easily install a cowl ventilation flap like the non-AC cars have due to the different sheet metal in the body (and that's what makes it difficult to retrofit factory AC into non-AC '64-'67s).

Did you cut the cowl out and weld that blocker piece in?

No, welded it on top of existing firewall after grinding any protrusions down. In hindsight, I wished I had cut out the old firewall for a cleaner look on the inside.

Does anybody make a block off plate or repro sheetmetal for the pass side kick panel? The panel is rusted out around where the evap core would go. Are there any options besides just welding in a piece of sheetmetal? I'll have to post pics, it's pretty gnarly around the evap core.

If you are open to the idea of converting the inner kick panel to a non-A/C configuration, Ames sells replacement metal in that location. See page 107 in their G35 catalogue. Nothing for the A/C configuration, however.

Perfect! I'm deleting A/C, so I'm OK with eliminating the opening for the evap box. I'll post progress here during the repairs. Thanks!

Update: cut out the rust and decided the easiest thing to do is just weld a sheet metal piece to block off the gaping hole. Does anyone use those kickpanel mount speakers? How do they mount? My car is missing the kick panels. Need to verify my hack job will allow the kick panel to mount, once I block off the area that was the evap box.

My 66 is an AC car. We converted to vintage air and the shop used a heater only box instead of the AC configuration. You can see the metal block off plate they used- I can ask where they got it if it helps?

I'm talking about the inner structure at the passenger's feet. 30 years of water leaks at the evap core really took its toll.

Latest progress below. Don't bag on my booger welding, it's hard to get in there!

Water shedding question... When it rains, water goes into the cowl vent (open area around windshield wipers). Where does that water go? It looks like it runs into the hidden areas behind the kick panels on both sides.
How does the water get out of the bottom of the car? I don't want to weld up a drain hole while I'm doing the repairs.

There is/was a 1" factory drain hole with plug in the lower cowl well on the underbody side.

Here's a pic from today showing work in progress. The plan is to cut out the heater/blower hole area and replace with a flat panel, similar to what Singleton showed. The difference is I want to do a 2-piece. One welded in place of the heater/blower and the other bolted over the evap box hole.

Was there a gasket between the evap box and the firewall? How was it sealed? I could use the gasket for a pattern, if there is one.

Section of the flange was rusted, so I cut it out and replaced it. What would you guys put in that lap weld between the existing cowl and the repair, (the left side of the pic)? I'm going to bend the repair into place and plug weld the new piece to the existing bracket on the left side. Butt weld it on the right side to the existing flange.

Here is the pass side kick panel welded shut. What should I coat it with, POR-15, Mastercoat Silver or what? Below is the link to Mastercoat, just read about it today on a different forum.

Edit: not sure why pic is sideways....

No comments? I'd like some input on what to use over the bare steel that's compatible with seam sealer. Once painted I'm going to use the Evercoat brushable seam sealer over all the welds to seal it up.
I assume the process is paint or primer over bare steel and then sealer, correct?
