The 455 weighs in at 8 lbs more then the 350 and yet makes a easy 50 more ft lbs of torque in a far more street / strip frendly rpm range even if it's only at 8.2 compression!

If the 455 was a 4 bbl motor then it has better heads then the 350 also.

I gues you know what my pick would be!

455 hands down. Only problem is handling the torque. Clutch, rear, suspension needs reinforced or at least checked for good welds, rust.

The 73 455 I have in my car had 4X heads and appeared to be as mother GM built it when I got it. I sweated the pilot bushing thing too, since I had already installed a TKO in the car. It turned out the 455 was machined for a pilot.

It looks like it's a factory 4 barrel motor.

I too needed a bushing fitted on my 455 build. Not a big deal.

For 1200 I would jump on the 455. Then offer 500 for the 350

73' YC is a factory 4bbl.

Doesn't really matter, but I think you need to check P/N and date code on that intake. It is a factory intake but I don't think it's a 73'. Looks like I see an EGR valve. Don't recall seeing EGR on 'non' CA smog engines. Far as I know the YC wasn't CA smog rated.

FWIW, 1973 was first year for EGR valves on 49 state engines, I've owned a few of bone stock cars 400s and 455s and they all had EGR systems on them. Plus over the years have worked on many of my customer cars that all 1973 Stratostreak V8s came with EGRs on them.

It looks like a AFB square Bore Carb on a adapter to mate it to the factory Qjet Intake.

That fuel filter sitting right onto of the very hot Exh crossover section of the heads needs to be relocated!

Real GTO's came with a 350 in 1974.

Well if you want to get into detail about the last true GTO was in the A body line, not the relabled Chevy Nova body line .

LOL, love these discussions.

But yeah, 455 all day long. Will feel much more powerful due to all the torque it'll make. Cubic inches is what makes torque. Build two engines with the same heads, cam, intake, exhaust, carbs and compression ratios but one is a 350 and one is a 455 and they'll make close to the same Horsepower on a dyno but the 350 will make it at much higher RPM and have less torque overall. The 455 will make a LOT more torque and at lower RPMs.

I have a bone stock '73 455 in my Formula currently. It doesn't want to run out past about 4500 RPMs but it absolutely shreds the tires from a stop or at low speeds. A 350 won't do that.

That makes no sense.

Based on that, the A body GTO was simply a relabeled Chevelle.

That only works if you ignore almost all the A-body sheetmetal.

Well, if you'd really rather have the 350, then go for it.

There's a reason Pontiac put 455s in their biggest, heaviest cars rather than 350s. There's a reason why guys who want to go as fast as possible build bigger engines too. If none of that's important, any old engine will do. Heck, you could always put a turbo on that 350.

After looking at the photos, you can tell it’s not really a Pontiac.
Wrong color.
