Lug Nut Blues
Update (but not an entirely successful one): Managed to get the c-clip out of the posi axle and slid the axle out several feet. Having a helluva time keeping my vise grips on the stud head.
Hard to believe the axle pushes in far enough for that c-clip to get by the posi cage, but it does. Talk about close. So even with the wheel and drum still attached, the axle DOES slide in far enough. Will probably take it to my local Christian Brothers shop to see if they can weld the stud and remove the damned nut. In the meantime, that's a picture of my dog helping...

Since you have the axle out now, why not just cut the stud head off?
(from back of axle) Gonna need a new stud anyway.

Agreed

That's actually what I'll try first. Thought trying to get my Dremel in at that angle would be a challenge, but once I pull the assembly entirely from the car, I think I'll be able to cut it off like you've suggested.

Might have better luck drilling it just enough for the head to come off. Then drive it out.

Success hours later (after 5 cutting disks and about an hour of grinding)!
Dog hours later...

Not sure, Old Goat. The flange hole looks okay, but it saw some stud spinning.
I've noticed that there is a wide range of stud lengths and knurl diameters available, but it's hard to determine which specs are for standard studs versus oversized ones... May have to try various ones to see which will grab effectively into the holes (I'll replace in sets of 5 on the rear axle flanges). Harvey

Harvey, if push comes to shove, buy a new axle. Is it pitted or worn where the bearing rides?

Just in case, who sells the correct 12-bolt rear axles for these 1972 GPs?

I haven't checked but I bet you could still buy them at a local parts store.
