I am not a 100% sure the bolt pattern on the rear of block is same as a later model motor but if it is I am sure there are other options available.A lot will depend on motor mounts too! I had some friends that have put TH400's in 60&61 cars. You might want to post this question in "Pontiac Drive Train-Street" section where more people will read it. There are some very knoledgeable people on this board willing to help. Jusy need to get to them.
Good Luck

The bolt pattern goes 55-60.
You can get a Hydramatic to shift pretty decent. They don't always take your neck off.
If you set the throttle pressure and adjust the bands, they work good and they are very strong(they were used in Army tanks).

The later trans may bolt to the block but there are other differences. It's not quite that easy. Besides those trans are not as good as the 1955 trans.

There is a company that is working on a solution for putting newer trans in 55-60 Pontiacs. Wilcap http://wilcap.com/index.html, has a 61-63 trans adaptor on the market now. They have the adaptor plate developed now. What they are working on now is some way to use the stock rear motor mounts. This adaptor will allow both BOP and Chevy trans types, GM AUTO PG, TH350, 400,700R4. Should be out in early 04. Should be the ticket. Jack

Another company I've found is Bendtsen’s http://www.transmissionadapters.com/index.htm
they currently have a kit available, even includes starter.
