Default 78 TA Glass Channel Weatherstrip

I need to buy this outer weatherstrip set for this car, but not sure which set I need, so I need to see pictures of both the set with the flat bead and the set without the bead on the cars themselves.

Thank you!

if you are talking about the window sweeps on the top edge of the door, the ones without the chrome (stainless) bead are for cars with the chrome decor trim, drip edge on the roof & chrome trim on top the doors & fender tips & back of hood. the type of sweeps with the chrome bead are for cars without the trim package.

AND I think you will have to buy what your car was equipped with. If 78W is talking about what I am thinking about...The cars with the bead have those retainer stubs (look like nail heads) spot welded to the door to retain the exterior bead. Cars that have no exterior trim do not have the stubs...

IF, IF, we are ALL on the same page???? Hope I didn't make this MORE confusing...

correct. if she means the weatherstrip channel on the outer top of the door, they are called window sweeps. cars with the chrome decor have the little nail heads attached to the door to hold the chrome trim, if the car didnt have the chrome trim when you got it & the nail heads arent there, it didnt have the chrome decor option & you would buy the type of sweeps with the chrome bead.

but if im misunderstanding what shes referring to, then sorry for the confusion...

Ok yeah my car has the black rubber on the bottom no round or flat trim. And no chrome trim around the windows. We just need to replace the outer bottom pieces.

based on that pic, your car has been repainted & is not original, chances are the person who repainted it just used the plain rubber sweeps & probably didnt know any better. if you dont have any other chrome trim or the nail heads on the top of the door skin then your car should have the sweeps with the rounded chrome bead. here is whats correct for your car, pics arent the best but you can see the rounded metal bead.

I cant think of many parts topics that are more confusing than the outer window felts! All these guys are right, you need the part with the chrome bead. At one time GM parts were available, you could get them through GM parts direct. I have heard second hand though that they are no longer available. Also from what I have read the repro parts do not fit correctly and some bending trimming may be involved to make them sit correctly.

i bought a few sets from GM parts direct, they are gone now, but GM ones are still available from some of the retailers... but they are pricey!

i bought some fairchild brand ones for my 72 firebird from rockauto that look & fit pretty good, but even the GM ones can have fitment issues on some doors, especially if they have had any body work or bondo to smooth the waviness of factory doors, all in all they fit very nice & are priced right at less than $50ea.

Make sure you select the thin round bead for outer seals, not the flat bead which was for Camaro. Unless you have the decor strips. They really should point out the differences and what is correct at 2GG.

There's really 3 types of outers, standard Camaro (flat bead), standard Firebird (round bead), Either with decor strips/plain (no bead).

In original form, your door will always feature one bright strip either on door top or on seal. Not two, and not None.

It's a trivial detail on the whole, either will fit and look fine. Many wouldn't care or know, but for those who want correct where available, they can decide based on the info supplied. A nice curve that fits would be good, this has been a known issue seemingly forever, the fact that most aftermarket seals have this same issue, seems to point to half being the same item under different brands, the others simply copied from one. Firebird enthusiasts will need to wait until Camaro guys expect better in order to get a replacement new product.

I've used both GM and Fairchild. The GM fit perfectly, but the Fairchild was a very very close match, and good bang for the buck.

Yep that’s the one I ordered the thin round bead.

Please let us know how they fit. I have not heard of this aftermarket part fitting properly yet (other than the previous post), being that GM is not available anymore the next closest thing will have to be the best I suppose.
