Default Amps Light Stays On After Starting

1978 Firebird Formula, 403, A/T, w/idiot lights. The amps light is staying on dimly after starting.

I'm OK at electrical issues and better at following recommendations.

Where do I start, what should I look for or test first and how.

Thanks

Measure the voltage at the battery when the engine is running. It should be approx. 14.0 volts.

If so, and the light is dim, you most likely have a bad Diode Trio in the alternator. It's not expensive but you need to take the alt apart to replace it, but it's not difficult if you can follow simple directions.

Thanks George. Next chance I get to look at the car I'll check the voltage and report back.

OK the Firebird is home and I checked the voltage at the battery. It is at 14.2 volts, so I probably have bad diodes correct?

Where would I get replacements and where can I find instructions to swap them out?

Will I hurt anything driving it like this untill I get it fixed?

Thanks for the help!

A good parts store should have them. Auto Zone has them listed on their website, they sell them for $6.00 to $22.00 depending on which alternator you have.

It's charging, you will be ok driving it. If you want to fix the diode trio, here are some manual pages to use as a guide.
