Default 68 Firebird rack alternatives

I had been considering a rack and pinion, but after seeing all the issues people have with Pontiac engines and systems designed for Camaros, I looked at alternatives

The combo I'm leaning toward now is the truturn and a quick ratio (10:1) manual box

Anybody running something similar?

I'm just not sure about the 10:1 on a street car that I will probably only see occasional autox and track (not drag) time with

I have a lares box in my 69 bird. It’s advertised as a 10:1 ratio, but I don’t think it’s actually that quick. Probably closer to 12:1.

That said, it’s well mannered on the street. It’s not twitchy which was one of my original concerns.

In a stock subframe, the rack causes more issues than anything. Anything you gain in road feel is overshadowed by fitment issues, worse than factory bump steer and reliability. Aftermarket subframes designed around a rack are far better.

On the TruTurn system, I to date haven’t been able to get a straight answer on if it fits with a traditional poncho. It piggy backs off the factory drag link and you may run into oil pan clearance issues. Since I could never get a straight answer I decided I didn’t want to be the guinea pig.
