Default Bucket Seat Newbie Questions

I just ordered Legendary seat covers and the good foam seat cushion kit from Ames .... what else do I need for the job?

Hog ring pliers?
Hog rings?

Does the foam cushion replace the burlap and batting? Or do I need that installation kit also?

Don't think I have any broken springs. Vehicle is a 68 GTO.

I did the seats on my 77, maybe a little different. You will need hog rings and pliers. I did my backs myself but had a pro do the fronts. I bought new foam and covers from legendary. They worked out great. I also had my frames blasted and powder coated. I got some new 'piano wires' for the bottom (its been awhile and cant remember where I got them). Guy doing the upholstery put in new batting and burlap. I believe you will need to either replace or reuse. For the small springs in the back I was able to source some parts from a local ace.

I did my buckets last year but wasn't happy with the covers that came with the car (Distinctive Industries from OPGI). But I did rebuild the springs, which weren't to bad but still had a few broken ones on the bolsters.

I contacted Ben Rambow who runs a small business primarily supplying seat material. He has kits to rebuild/replace broken springs and any necessary padding for buckets, bench and rear seats.

He also walked me through a few areas I was having problems with.
He recommends against aftermarket springs or complete assemblies as they are made from a thicker steel than original and don't compress as well.

New springs on the right.

Don't scrimp on the cutters or pliers. Your wrists will thank you. I bought my hog ring pliers and cutters from NPD, but any good upholstery supply should have them.

I plan to revisit my seats with new covers later this winter when Legendary has their annual sale. Just bought their headliner and I'm very impressed with the product. Thats my next step in the restoration.

0G68, I ordered the same cushion foam as you have shown there. Where did you get the burlap/batting kit?

Legendary also has the burlap and batting. That's where I got mine. The better hog ring pliers from them too.

I have my installation kits for front and rear coming from Ben. Ordered my cotton batting, American Cushion Industries foam on the way ... and Legendary covers coming with a 5 - 6 month ETA.

Do the foam cushions for the front buckets come with the muslin already attached? Was watching some videos and it looked like the foam had muslin flaps that were used to hog ring on the foam. Unclear in any product pictures if the muslin is already on them, or if it has to be glued on or something.

Sweet, thanks. Think I'm getting handle on it. Watched a bunch of videos. Going to start with the lower backseat. Wife and I cleaned up the back seat today, vinyl still quite soft and flexible, seat back is going to stay as is, has some fading next to the package shelf but not bad. Bottom vinyl looks great but enough mouse mischief that I'll redo the padding.

Figure better to get a feel for things with the easier back seat first.

Any chance the Legendary stuff will show up quicker than 5-6 months?

I was looking around at my various piles of parts today and realized ... if I was so inclined I could probably put this car on the road for $500 and a couple of months if I wanted a primer driver, tempting sometimes

I was pleasantly surprised when I received my headliner within a month.

For me, headliner took about a month, front/rear seats took about 6 months.
