Default TA hood bird installation

How hard is it to replace a faded hood bird with a new one? And does the entire hood need to be re painted?

I have not tried to remove an original hood bird, but I would suspect it would be next to impossible without having to refinish the hood. At one time I had quite a few original hoods, the bird almost becomes one with the painted surface, to the point that the bird will actually 'etch' itself into the paint. I have read that its actually the adhesive that caused that. Installing a new one is not that difficult, just be patient and careful.

The intended car is a survivor car, the bird has fading and tiny hairline cracks in the wings. We don’t have it yet, as depending on the cost of replacing the bird decal will help us decide to pull the trigger or not. If you blow it up you will see the cracks. That tells me that hood will most likely need be stripped to bare metal. Then if we do get this car, which company is better Stencil and stripes, or Phoenix Graphics?

This is not the car I was looking at a few weeks ago. This is a 78

I remember doing these back in the day. Everything, and I mean everything, about the job was a bitch.

Some of the hoods that had minor damage, I had to remove the bird with a heat gun and many razor blades.

Others, where the bird was all sun beat, faded, dried out, and the complete hood needed paint anyway, I took 40 grit on a DA and sanded the bird off.

Then, after the hood was painted came the unpleasant fun of installing the new bird.

Yep...… Don't miss those days or working on those cars.

MA if you watch the very last “Overhaulin” show, they built a 78 TA. I hear the OH’n show is back. The 78 TA was done at the end of the first series.
They show some of the bird that installation. It by no means easy, but can be done. The condition of the paint underneath will come through in the decal. The paint needs to be perfect.
Removing the old bird without having problems AND the hood being in primo condition for installation of a new bird, would be pretty miraculous
They make plastic razor blades that are made for scraping inspection sticker off plastic windshields. You may be able to take a razor blade scraper and a heat gun and carefully try to remove the old decal. BUT, where the bird is checked, the paint is likely the n same condition.

So communicating with this car’s owner, I think we’re just going to let him do it he will completely strip that bird off and the entire hood will get a repaint and new bird. Waiting on some more pictures of trunk, and undercarriage before we make an offer.

Removal and installation is not bad at all, BUT it will require a repaint. Painting the hood will be the most expensive part of the deal. If you can get it done before purchase to your satisfaction then let the other guy take care of it.

I think we have a deal worked out with the seller for his shop to do the work as kind of a discount for the previous purchase of our current TA BURT.
