Jim lived in a mobile home park on the beach and traveled about the southland in a gold Firebird Esprit [models 1975-1978]. Its license read: 853-OKG.
According to James Garner, the license plate number (853-OKG) on Jim Rockford's Firebird was thought up by his agent. It represents August of 1953 when James Garner got his first acting role and the OKG comes from his home state of Oklahoma and the first letter of his last name! Rockford Firebird |

He actually did start off with a '74.

I second what SD73 says 74 Bird was used first, not uncommon to see him drive one year bird and use another year for the stunts or crashes, watch closely.
Here's a shot of a rockford clone

Its funny on the link they say a 75-78 bird but the one in the picture is a 74. I only remember seeing the 75 in the shows.

I seem to remember a couple of times where a '70-'73 Firebird was used as Rockford's stunt car. One particular time that sticks in my head was when a '70-'73 went head first into a lake. In another episode, a '70-'73 was trashed by a car bomb. Maybe someone else can recall these two episodes.

Got you covered Jim. They did use a few '73's for disposable cars. |

I remember the 73 STYLE FIREBIRD that ROCKFORD drove - also Saw the 400 emblem on his 74 that he did a pretty good burnout in --I read somewhere that all his FIREBIRDS started out as Formulas and were made to look like a plain Bird . The best chase scene I saw was when he embarrased a souped Vette with one of his Famous 180's .

Anybody remember one of the stunt cars that was trashed that was a '70-73 with a '75-81 rear window? I thought that was real odd. Must have been one of Pontiacs styling cars from the design studio.
