Hey Paul, thanks for posting this! I just got a new aluminum radiator that sits a bit lower than stock. I'm sure I would have had the same problem had I not read your post.

Cheers,
Sammy

You're welcome; however, the big thanks go to ScreamingChief for that excellent tech tip and GT182 for telling me "hey Paul, you should make a separate thread with that info!"

I'm still not convinced my $$$ aluminum radiator on the LeMans is any better than my standard 4 row desert cooler on the Firebird...they both run at the same temp!

Of course it's better, it's probably about 15lbs lighter! Crap, by the time I'm done with my Lemans, I'll probably have shaved off an easy 100+ pounds from the front end (aluminum radiator, aluminum intake, no more a/c, etc).

Only problem now, is I'll have to fab up some new brackets to raise up the radiator a bit. More work!

Default Temp Sending Unit Line Too Hot, Gives False Temp Reading

I was out to a cruise night this past Saturday and was talking to a few guys that have been having over heating issues too. One of guys suggested wrapping the line for the temp sending unit in the intake back to the firewall. Reason being the heat from the water crossover and engine will mess up the temp reading for the gauge, the mercury in it will pick up heat and give a false reading.

That's one I haven't heard before and kind of makes sense. Tho I'm not sure if it true or not. Has anyone done this, and what would you use to wrap it and keep it cooler?

Nah, having a much better day today than yesterday!
  • the fools that built my carb took the Firebird in today (after a verbal ass-chewing)
  • I made some headway in the "fuel tank" issue
  • I made some headway in the tail light issue
  • The rear of the frame on the '68 and the goofy little "wings" look great after blasting, grinding and painting!

So, things are looking up! Sorry to hear about the rain, we sure could use it out here! Why not build the baddest amphibi-goat, like the blokes on Top Gear did? That would be cool...

BC I'd love to send ya some rain. AmphiGoat... no thanks. I don't need the saltwater on it, nor the polluted crap they call water in the streams and rivers here. Besides, I've never seen a Goat that could swim very well.... amphibleous or not. LOL

Sounds great things are finally coming along with your LeMans, 'Bird, and Goat.

Aluminum dissipates heat better Paul; keep in mind a 455 will generate more heat as its a bigger displacement engine.

actually, aluminum doesn't dissipate heat better than copper/brass. an aluminum radiator (because of the structrual ability to have wider tubes) does dissipate heat better than a copper/brass radiator, fwiw.

So what you're saying is my 455 would be running even hotter if not for the aluminum radiator?

How much hotter?

Quick update; my GTO always ran a tick above 190*. I cut down the radiator hose and swapped the thermostat with a 160* that also had a small hole (1/16"?) drilled in the outside flange.

Drove the car today and yesterday around town, and the temp didn't even hit 190*!

I'm stoked!!!

Sounds good BC. By any chance is that a Stant 160 thermostat? I have a 180 sitting here that has the 1/16th bypass hole. Didn't help for me so I went with a Mr. Gasket High Flow 180 thermostat. Sure is pushing more water thru the radiator now. Couldn't find a Robert Shaw stat around here, but found the Speed Shop had the Mr. G. Works very well so far.

Thumbs up

Gary,

I think it's a Stant but I'm not sure. I drove my GTO home today, 90* weather, 40 mile trip, traffic lights for the first 4 miles then stop and go (mostly go) freeway for 10 miles then wide open freeway the rest of the way. I was cruising at 75-80mph, and not once did my car get over 190*. I'm running 50/50 anti-freeze along with some Royal Purple crap that NAPA had. No problems, she ran cool the entire time!

I'm wondering if this had anything to do with it...

Open scoops look cool, and I don't think it'll hurt having extra air flowing thru. I've thought about opening up mine up but to pull them off the hood would ruin the paint job.

Glad to hear she's running cooler. I added the green stuff that's like the Water Wetter. Don't know if it helps but hey... anything that will help lube things up in there has gotta be good. LOL

If anything that stuff might help inhibit corrosion and lube the water pump

I've heard it helps, but you ask 10 different car guys one question, you'll get 10 different answers.
