Default The pump is here

OK, the pump came in today and here is the poop on it. The casting number on the impeller is 488297. There is also a BD cast on the impeller. The width of the impeller is 4.33" and the impellers are right at 1/2" at the edge of the impeller and 5/8" at the center. When I put on the new GM divider plate without the gasket there was about 1/8" between the vane and the divider. Overall the pump is in pretty good shape considering it is 36 years old. The vanes show some wear. I definitely would recommend Mike at waterpumpman.com (248) 225-0625. He even included two gaskets. It seems like a really sound pump. I am glad I did it this way. It cost less than the so called high flow units with the cut down impellers.
Looks like 428 might have actually found a great, new unit with a good impeller.

Thanks Dale and 428 for posting that excellent information. Hopfully this will get me closer to solving my heat issues. I need to check to see if there is a Bosch short neck equivalent and if not I may need to go to waterpumpman.

Have any of you ever heard of Flow-Thru water pumps?

I was on the Napa site looking for an early 69 11-bolt with the short neck casting #9796351 and they list two different options. One is for a rebuilt #WP 58302 and the picture shows it with a stamped impeller. The second option is for a new Flow-Thru #TFW 43123 and it's shown with a cast impeller and costs $71.99. Check out the picture... doesn't look as good as the Bosch.

FYI, I checked with Pep Boys and they don't have a Bosch with a short neck, only the 4 1/2" version.

Dale, I passed on the info to Cardone for the 11 bolt's impeller part number. Hopefully I'll hear back from them Thursday or Friday.

I think that once they get the correct part out there I will buy and test another pump. I have the Evans pump on the brain!!

But I think my pump needs more clearancing as I think at speed my pump is cavatating. I know that I have a Napa pump. It has been so long that I dont remember if it has the long vanes or the vanes with the ring around the base...

When you say "ring aound the base" do you mean like the picture of the Flow-Thru in my last post?

Mark,
That is the one with the impeller cut down. I really don't have any experience with the cut down version, it just seems to me it won't move as much water because the surface area is smaller. I would see if you could find a good core and have someone rebuild it. Have you tried Aurther Gould, 631-269-0093? They also have some cores that they will rebuild for you. I talked to a guy named Chris and he was kind enough to check for me and actually called me back. But they did not currently have what I was looking for. Might be worth calling them and see what they have.

I hope it will help so they can start producing pumps with the correct impeller. It would be nice knowing there are new ones available in case this one ever goes out.

We're trying Dale.... it's about all we can do. We've just got to get Cardone rolling again on these correct pumps. But don't worry. I've heard a rumor there's another avenue in the works just in case. Mind you tho, it's only a rumor at this time.

Gary,
I am sure everyone that ever needs to replace their original pump appreciates all of your hard work to get someone to produce new pumps with the proper impeller that are not Made in China junk. I am just glad I was able to find an original pump that had been rebuilt and in such good shape. Good shape original pumps are getting harder to find. It helps that I wasn't picky about casting numbers and date codes since my car is far from numbers matching.
Thanks again,
Dale

Well, I may have just got lucky... a 9796351 short pump just popped up on ebay that says it's a nors and looks to have a good impeller so I snagged it for $39.99 + free shipping. I couldn't pass it up for the price especially since I've been hunting for one of these for a while.

WOW, that is a great buy. Does it need rebuilt or was that for a rebuilt unit? Either way, it is a great buy.

Nick, does your napa have a cast impeller? I ask because there are guys that can run with the stamped impeller with no problem. Also, from what I've heard, buying a rebuilt pump from napa and other sources is hit or miss with regard to what style of impeller you get. In my case I need all the help I can get.

Dale, the ad for the pump I got says "re-manufactured" and "like new condition" so expect to be able to just bolt it on. Another cool thing is that this pump has the casing # as well as a date code that would be about right for my engine. That's not a big deal but the pump I have now is generic with a blank casting.

Mark,
That is a great buy then. I paid a lot more than that for my rebuilt one with an original impeller. Sometimes you can actually find great deals if you are patient and happen to be at the right place at the right time.

Dale and GT182,

I got the waterpump that I bought off ebay yesterday and it looks nice and has a big cast impeller but the number on it is different than the one reported by Dale earlier. This one has 9796352 (all one number) and a seperate "sm" on it.

Mark,
I would imagine that the original impellers might have been replaced throughout the years with the GM rebuild kits, so I would have no idea what the original casting numbers would be. I would be more concerned that the impellers are the right length and height and not worry that much about the casting number. Once the pump is installed no one will ever see the casting number. I know the original GM rebuild kits, that are still out there on ebay, come with a new cast impeller and I am sure the casting number won't match the pump it is going on because these kits were made to fit a lot of different pumps. The vanes on my pump are right at 5/8" tall when measured towards the center. They are a little shorter on the outside edge. I still think you got a great buy on your pump.

Dale, you make a very good point that there may have been different part numbers for rebuild kits and i had not even considered that. GT182 requested an impeller part number though so when I saw that I had something different I thought that I'd pass it along since I have it available.

I also found it interesting that the pump housing casting # is 9796351 and the impeller casting # is 9796352 so my guess would be that the impeller is the original GM part.
