After reading this thread and having overheating problems I removed the water pump and ordered a new one. Now I'm having second thoughts about my existing water pump. In the thread there is a SS plate mentioned. Mine doesn't have any and I have trouble imagining how water could forced out of th epump with such a wide gap between impeller and housing. Maybe I'm missing the SS plate?

I'm going to call Cardone tomorrow and see what's up on the pumps. They should be ready by now, but I've had no word from them so far. I'll also check and see what the part number will be. Not sure if it's going to be the same as what I got. They said something about making a special part number for them.

As soon as I find out I'll post it here.... hopefully sometime tomorrow morning.

It does look that way.

Maybe i'm interpreting your post wrong but are you saying you don't have any diverter plates between the water pump and the timing cover?

Correct. The person that rebuilt the engine must have been a Chevy man. No divider plates at all, water was just churning in there.

Just got off the phone with Cardone. The 58-299 number is not for the pump with the new correct impeller. There will be a new number setup for the 8 bolt pump with the correct impeller. They don't have that number as of now, as I was told they are doing the retooling for the impeller. How close to done I'm not sure. They are having a meeting this week, possibly as late as Friday, and I will receive info by email on where they stand with this new impeller and the part number for the pump.

If anyone orders the 58-299 pump you will still get the 8 bolt pump with the incorrect shaved down impeller blades. I appologise as I thought this was the new part number. My new pump came in a box with this number but it had the new impeller in it. They do have some of these pumps at the plant but it would take hours go look for one.

Hang in there, they are coming soon. I will know more later this week and let you all know as soon as I hear from Cardone.

No GV, 8 bolt pumps only. As far as I know up to now, there's no problem with the 11 bolt pumps and the SS divider plate for it. Note that I said 'so far'. So you are safe, and one of the lucky ones.

Wanna trade your whole 11 bolt setup for mine? LOL

O.K. I am confused Is 11 bolt for 70 and up or 8 bolt for 70 and up? I have a 74 block in a 79 T/A.

69-up use the 11 bolt water pump, 64-68 uses the 8 bolt water pump.

So Gary Cardone's 11 bolt water pump is ok or do they need to fix them as well?

Also add: '63 engines built in 1963 also have 8 mounting holes.

I didn't realize that the impeller clearance issue was considered an 8 bolt only problem.
I have an 11 bolt pump on my '68 and I can tell you for sure that the clearance was pretty wide.
Is the clearance just not an issue with the 11 bolt style? Can't see why it wouldn't be.

I thought it was also. Weren't some 11 bolts units left with Cardone for analysis?

I talk to Jim butler and he says there is no problem with water pump if over heating it is timing or running lean. cooling system is just coolant and air.
