Baby it's cold out side!
Where does your temp go sitting still ,no load and holding @ steady highway like rpm?

Put the good fuel to it yet?

That's been the problem, on highway at steady 3,000 temps rise to about 205. But I specifically stayed off the highway to keep RPM's down while I burn through a full tank of gas before I try the 100 octane again.

And yes, Eddie Murphy, it's COLD in here.

Sounds similar to what I was fighting. With my Taurus fan running, hwy driving with ambient temps in 60's, the FB could do 190's. By the time ambient temp got to 80+, it couldn't hack it. That why I shotgunned it with rad, shroud, clutch, and fan.

If I sit for a few minutes in a drive-thru or at a stoplight in 100+ ambient temps at idle, I will get a little creep up toward 190-ish. But that comes right back down once I get cruising again.

I think the Taurus fan pulls air great for idle, but acts as a restriction at speed. At the track when I was in the staging lanes I would turn the fan off to keep temps from getting too cool. But the highway drive home was always a nervous event due to temp creep at cruise.

Yes, in looking at that electric fan shroud, I can see how restrictive it could be at highway speed.

I'd like to keep my radiator if possible, because it's not stock and I like the way it fits. But if it has to go then it has to go. I think that I think I'll start with the clutch fan and shroud set up because that's the easiest thing to start replacing.

Does anyone know if I can fit the larger fan shroud on a car that's originally for the 15 1/2 inch radiator? (My radiator core is 21x18).

If I go with the smaller OEM radiator fan shroud then I can only go as large as 18 inch on the fan. I'm wondering if that's enough.

Here are more pics of my current setup:

See post 10 my electric fan covers my entire radiator, Car runs at 180 all day long with timing locked. It can be done as many on here have said. Make sure you are not just throwing parts at it. Did you do a test without a thermostat?

Freaking fuel line. I have NO IDEA what he was thinking when routing it. It actually touches the lower radiator hose, ya know, for better fuel heating! LOL. I've got a completely new 1/2" fuel delivery system from pickup to carb in the garage awaiting installation.

JSPONT,
how big is your radiator core? What fan is that? How deep? I've got 5.25" clearance between core and water pump pulley.

I am running a new highflown 160° thermostat Which I tested before installing.

I'm running a Hayden 2797 clutch + Fan + Shroud and have the exact same issue at highway RPMs 3k+. I don't have as good of a radiator as Adam, but I am running the desert cooler larger unit, however with 65 correct same side hose orientation.

No issues around town < 65 MPH.

My radiator is a be cool 2 core for a 69 Camaro/firebird. I took that fan from a Hyundai sonata. it covers the entire core. I have about a 1/2 inch between the pulley and that fan. I had a Northern radiator before this and it did not do the job. Car always ran hot with the northern. The be cool rads are cheap for stick shift cars. I called them I forget who I spoke to but he told me what I needed and it worked perfect.

What is the core measurement?

Not sure it is be cool part 10168. Its at summit 319.00 free shipping! They have all the dimensions on the site. You can get a be cool for your year and I'm sure it will work well and bolt in. I had to get a smaller radiator for my car because of the turbo charger mounted in the right front.

your radiator is:

Core Width (in):24.5" x 17.5"

Mine is:
Radiator core size: 21"x18";
Radiator exterior: 26 x 18.5 x 2.25"

So I don't think that fan will work unless it's ok to cover some of the tank.

I think a be cool for your car will help, and the fan you have should do if all other stuff is good. Give them a call The guy I had on the phone was great and gave me an education!

See, now I'm thinking the exact opposite. I think the radiator may be ok but the fan isn't cutting it on the highway, maybe because the shroud blocks too much natural airflow.

Take the electrical fan off and just bolt any mechanical fan on. Do you have a shroud for it? take it for a ride on the highway, If it still runs hot you know what it is. Do you have any of the stock stuff to try?

I don't have anything to try. That's what I want to do first. I figured I'd have to buy stuff.

Try to remover the 4 long thru bolts on the water pump one at a time. If they come out easily, which I would bet they will on a relatively recent build and good coolant having been in it, remove the pump and see what you got going on with sleeves, impeller type and clearance. It's been the magic fix for many.
That's where I'd be looking first.

I had time for a ride today. Same 60° temps outside so I hopped on the highway. Steady highway = 195-202 or so. Going around town and temps came down quickly to 185°.

I went and saw a local parts guy who had both AC & non AC shrouds on stock. My car is a non AC car so I assume I need to go with a 18" fan.

Anyway, my weird radiator will require modifications to the shroud to make it fit. The guy suggested I try the 18" fan without shroud just to see if getting rid of the electric fan and restrictive shroud helps.

Do 11 bolt water pumps flow better than 8 bolts? Cast vs. cast or flowkooler. vs flowkooler, is the 11 bolt timing cover and divider more effective than the early style?

Was that with the "good" fuel?

Where does your temp go sitting still ,no load and holding @ steady highway like rpm?

Does it heat up when you stand on it too?

Those upper rad mounts look "pliable".
