Column Mounted Tachometer
Guys, the 1965 GTO I recently bought has an aftermarket tach from "day 2" installed on the steering column. It doesn't have a transmitter and runs straight off the distributor,
The brand isn't visible on the old unit but I'd like to change it to a different vintage tach like a Radatron or Dixco. Can anyone tell me which brand is the same simple hook-up or how you might have set up yours. Thanks in advance

Pictures of what you have would narrow it down from a crap shoot.
Radatron and Dixco were the 2 least likely to be used back then. Sun and Autometer were the 2 of choice by serious racers. On a crap shoot, without seeing it, I'm going to say Autometer because their name is in small print at the bottom of the dial. Kinda difficult to see. |

I believe there is a re-pop vintage appearing Sun tach on the market now that does not require the transmitter box.

Sun SuperTach II and its knockoffs are 4 wire (power, ground, points or coil - and dash lamp), 270 degree sweep and come with a steering column mount.
Bosch and others make a 90 degree sweep dash or column mount tach with a similar 4 wire connection. No sending units for any modern (late 60s or newer) tach.

RAC was a real popular brand back in the 1960's. I used them on my cars. You could buy them at department stores, speed shops and auto parts stores.

Here is a picture of the 55 year old unit. That's cardboard wedged in the glass to keep it from moving around.

That looks real familiar, I just can't think of the brand right now. It also looks like the lower portion of the lens was painted by someone, not the maker. That might explain the cardboard holding the lens.
This might be a Chevy piece. People would take factory Pontiac tachs and vacuum gauges, paint over the Pontiac name and use them in other cars. |

Glad to see it has the standard issue radiator clamp holding it to the column.......

Thank you guys for responding. I'll check out your ideas and look into a vintage Sun FZ tach or a new vintage looking one. Chief, the tach lens wasn't painted but when I move it around there is still no name to be found. Thanks again.

That kind of looks like a Stewart Warner. Here's a pic of my Sun.

This is my Stewart Warner tach from 1965. Dad pulled it from a 64 Fairlane when he traded it in and installed it under the dash of the GTO in 68. I pulled it out 15 years later when I installed a factory in dash tach. Since then it's been in a 65 Chevy pickup, 64 Catalina, and a 70 El Camino. El Camino has been sold so the SW is going back into the GTO and I'm installing a clock in place of the in-dash tach. The SW is still accurate after 55 years. Sending unit goes back on the firewall.
