Default Fual gauge

Hey guys, I added a few gallons of gas yesterday and drove maybe 5 miles when my gas gauge in my 69 GTO fell from half a tank to almost empty! Later when I drove home after warming up my car the gauge started working then halfway home it fell again, the 5 min later it started working again! What could be the problem? How can I check for power and ground? Thanks

A bad ground usually makes the gauge go to FULL. I'd suspect a poor power connection to the gauge.
