I have a 65 GTO that I am putting in an internally regulated alternator and have a problem. It does not produce a charge and I dont know whats wrong. What I have is:
Wire from the post to the starter solenoid(with battery cable). Wire from the post to the ignition to feed the fuse box. Wire from the plug on the side of the alt. to the post on the alt. Other wire on the plug to the dash light. Isnt that basically it? What am I missing?

Ditto on what Johnta says. The idiot light gets connected to term #1 on the alt, and term #2 gets connected to the alternator output stud (battery).
Disconnect or remove the wires going to the old mechanical regulator.

Regards, George

When my dad put one on his GTO, all he did was run the regular alternator wire and run the power wire straight off the battery. His works great.

Give me a thumbs up, tell me "Nice Car!", but for god's sake, don't call it an Impala.

Why did my post get put at the top instead of the bottom?

Give me a thumbs up, tell me "Nice Car!", but for god's sake, don't call it an Impala.

To Bonneville Joe: They will work with the following exception: The wire on term #1 (idiot light) does two things. First, it "excites" the alternator, meaning that it provides some field current so that once it starts spinning, the alternator starts up and begins to charge. Secondly, it turns the idiot light on and off. Without the term #1 wire, the alternator will "self excite" but only by revving up the engine momentarily. The residual magnetism inside will get it going at higher rpm.

Regards, George
