Removing exhaust manifolds
Gentlemen, I looked in the muffler/exhaust forum but didn't see anything regarding this on a 65 gto w/ a/c 389 tripwr.
Will I have to pull engine to install exhaust manifolds? I had an extra set and had them ceramic coated. Tips, advice any help on best way to proceed will be appreciated. Thanks |

Not at all. You may need to remove the driver's side motor mount bolt to jack the engine up slightly for steering shaft clearance. With the AC, you may need to remove components for access as well.

I just did that 2 years ago. Took both mount bolts out, fan shroud off, if you have one, and raise the engine until the dist cap gets close to the firewall. piece of cake. "Bill"!

One more question. Did you separate engine from tranny??

NO I loosened the mount to cross member bolts. I did remove the hood and use a cherry picker for more control. That's it. "Bill"!

I removed an old set of headers from a '67 GTO and installed some log manifolds several years back. Not much difference between the '65 and '67, both used essentially the same chassis/frame.
I didn't need to jack up the engine, the most I had to do was to remove the starter motor. To put the manifolds in you'll need to have all the bolts already in place in the manifold (at least the two longer ones in the center) and then slip it into place. You'll just have to get a little creative to keep the bolts from falling out until the manifolds are completely in. The driver's side is a bit tighter than the passenger side.
