the GTO grills are blacked out in the center sections.

The black center section of the grills is what set the 64 GTO off from the Tempest, and I think the LeMans too.

I'm about to repaint mine. What black is correct? Flat? Gloss? What color?

I know this is an old thread, I am restoring a 64 Tempest. I understand GTO grill were black...

I have 2 grills on my Tempest (standard NOT custom) and one has a black border with aluminum grills and the other is ALL aluminum looking. What is correct for the lowly Tempest? No paint at all? For the Tempest Custom just black paint around the outer frame of the grill (like a Lemans?)

My low end Tempest had no paint on the grilles.

This is my bottom of the line Tempest. It's hard to see in this picture, but the grilles are unpainted. This picture was taken in 1991, and the car had already been off of the DMV rolls for over 10 years.

The GTO, I believe was the only offering that had the Black Grill "treatment accent".

In college, I removed the GTO emblem on the grill and the GTO emblems on the quarters when I was being "bothered" by the Kalamazoo Police Department so the car had no "GTO" markings but people in the know still knew it was a GTO.

Reverse clone?
De-badged?
Tempest clone?

The grille border is black on my standard '64 Tempest.

Same goes for some Tempest Custom grilles that I pulled.

Sometimes most of the paint ends up fading or disappearing to the point that it's hard to see, but it's definitely there. By this time after 50+ years it's half gone or more on most of these cars, what's left is easily removed with rubbing compound or solvent.

There is also black paint on the thin vertical reinforcement bars separating the horizontal grille bars as well, so they 'disappear' styling-wise.

No that was the "One more ticket and you go to jail in Kalamazoo, Michigan" defense strategy against the ambitious LEOs preying on poor college students.

Had nothing to do with tempest clone or reverse clone ... But debadged GTO would be appropriate probably.

One of those tickets was for running out of gas on a hill and coasting down the hill to the gas station, (below the speed limit) but coasting is against the law apparently.
