Dual Snorkle Air Cleaner for '76 Trans Am
We need a dual snorkel air cleaner for our '76 Trans Am. I know the factory air cleaner only had one snorkel, but we would like to use one with two. We have the original shaker scoop. We want the scoop to be functional. How can this be done with the air cleaner as requested above?

I made mine up for my 73 ... got an extra snorkel from somewhere and tacked it on
The end of the snorkel I had to modify to make them both look similar ..not perfect but acceptable

air clnr
You're going to have to use a 70/72 T/A air clnr. They are reproduced. I have some originals

If we work under the presumption that you are going to want to run as many period correct Pontiac/Firebird parts as possible , then the following needs to be considered.
You cannot use a pre-1973 Firebird air cleaner base with a post-1972 Quadrajet; The choke pot hits the air cleaner. your options are: 1) modify a 73-79 Firebird Pontiac 350/400/455 4bbl air cleaner base with a period correct carb. 2) use a pre-egr carb with a pre-egr Pontiac Quadrajet.

curious why you want a dual snorkel? the single wide snorkel with the cold air ducting is the best way to get fresh air to the motor. the dual air cleaner as pictured pulls hot air from the hottest part of the engine, right above the header/manifold. & if you plan to use a functional shaker, dual snorkels are kind of pointless as the shaker will pull the fresh air. unless youre really set on a custom dual look, the factory 75-79 T/A air cleaner is the best easiest option for fit & function.

Thank you for the info. We're using a '77 Quadrajet. I had no idea there is an issue with fitment with various Quadrajets.
Our interest in the dual snorkels is for appearance only. I understand that if we make the shaker scoop functional, the snorkels are not an issue for cold air into the engine.

Late '70's Pontiac Qjets, on the other hand, have a different design airhorn with the vent protrusion located in slightly different spot & that's where repositioning the mating hole, comes into play, in order to use an earlier aircleaner base or asm. Mike Ransom has posted pics before of the minute differences in the bases of the large mouth '73 (SD) through '79 W72 aircleaners. Have examples of all of the bases as well. Dick, on 3 occasions Ive supplied a wide mouth Pontiac donor snorkel to T/A owners that have contacted me over the years desiring to make a dual large mouth snorkel T/A aircleaner for their car. Basically a Pontiac version similar to a late '70's L82 Vette aircleaner. While this can be done, there are quite a few issues. First, it's best the late 70's Bird is a factory non AC car as room is at a premium for the pass side snorkel. Next, will need a straight on style plastic snorkel adaptor (reproduced) & then it becomes an issue of what flex duct, & where is the flex duct going to be routed to on the front passenger side. have only seen clean results from one of these deals & the owner fabbed a "zip tube" out two molded plastic ducts.

I believe you are mistaken. The 1973 Trans Am did not come with a dual snorkel air cleaner. Last time I checked, an OE 1971-1972 Firebird dropped base air cleaner did not have clearance for a 1973+ carburetor's hot air choke mechanism; A 1971-1972 GTO/Full sized car air cleaner would, but those are not dropped base aircleaners, and will set the shaker too high.

I say this as respectfully as possible;
Once again you are mistaken. All 1973 air cleaners were the same style. I am actually quite surprised you are making this argument.

To op if you can handle a little fab work I have a dual snorkel air cleaner that the lower part is rusty but the snorkels look good. Just drill out 4 spot welds and swap them to yours. You would have to cut another opening in your base if you wanted to make both snorkels functional. I can even drill them off to save on shipping.

roger, im not sure what you are talking about on the 73 ta's. as you know I have owned too many to count 73 ta's and never had one with a dual snorkel.

Are you looking for something like this? My 76 T/A. If so, I took the 76 air cleaner and modified. I welded two snorkels on it. I also modified the lid. The Air filters fit very nice on these units because of the shaker. It's tapered so it goes inside the scoop nicely.
