I always thought (assumed) the scallop/not scallop distinction was specific to '63/'64.

You mean non-scalloped?
For the 421 engine? From the many examples shown so far, it appears the straight deck of the 421 may have been changed with the new block casting in 1966 for the 421. (9782611) Also may have been some carryover blocks with the casting code 9778791 (which was used in prior years) in the beginning of the model year? (they were the straight deck)

I had a 1966 xWJ 421 engine in my 2+2 convertible. I will search through some old pics later today and see about the scallop or not. Should have some block pics in the restoration records. Wonderful engine BTW.

Looked through the pics I had easy access to. My block has the scallop on the right front face. I had about a dozen pics of the engine but not a single one with a clear shot of the block casting # or the casting date unfortunately. It was made on the day shift and that's all I could really make out. Tried a magnefine glass, still could not tell.

I can’t seem to keep the attached pics from rotating.
They’re clearer though

I've got a '04 421 code 45B, the high HP Tripower version. The block is straight across as I thought all 421's were until this thread. My two '68 428's do have the wave in the casting in the area discussed above. Pictures attached.
One of these days, I need to figure out what to do with the 421. It is a short block assy. with valve eyebrows for later model heads. As you can see, it is bored to 4.185" from the original 4.093".. That's about .092" over standard. Is that OK with a '64 421?.

Dick, I think the block casting code is 9773157?
The 3's can look like an "8". Looks like a nice 421 HO.

Thanks! Learning some new Pontiac Info on 1966 421 Blocks.
This discussion started, as many know now, years ago with the 1964 Royal GTO magazine article and Wangers/Schornack attempts to pass a 421 engine off as a 389 tri-power engine. Tom V.

I have a 66 casting at .090 now. It still has an avg of .200 to .210 on the thrust side.

I know this is an old thread, I just wanted to add a data point, this is the WH block from my '66 421 My car was ordered November of '65, and has the 421 with the flat (non scalloped) block. The casting date, however, is pretty tough to read but could be 0205.

Even though the block only has 2 freeze plugs per side maybe at that point the foundry was starting the transition to the 428 block?

64 and 65 421 Blocks all seem to have the "flat" across the passenger side of the block.
I have seen quite a few of the 66 blocks with the scalloped block. More trivia. Only a expert like Keith Seymore or his dad would have the real knowledge on how the different plants in Pontiac worked. Tom V.
