Default 66 Automatic shifter handle

After 6 months in winterstorage in my basement i drove it out today to start the season. I noticed the shifter handle was a bit loose and when i took off the knob the whole shifter handle/tube came off. I can se that i has a clean break about an inch under the console opening and the rest of the handle sits firmly down on the shifter mechanism. So i wonder if anyone have one for sale, and can ship it to me in Norway? Im not sure how much of the shifter i need but maybe someone on this board knows. Car is a 66 GTO
Thanks

Anstein,

There you are. Glad to see a post from you from Norway!

I still wish I could have secured that YR ‘66 back in the 80’s when it was just a few miles north of me.
But it found a good home with you across the big pond.

Sorry to hear about that shifter break, never seen that before.

I don’t have one for you, but is it possible to epoxy a sleeve to the inside and still allow the metal shaft to have clearance?

Good Luck, your friend Chris.

My friends 68 LeMans came with a 350 engine & 2 speed auto & it has the same shifter as the 66. So more than one model used it.

Hi Chris(and evereybody else)

I have been thinking of that story many times, world isnt always so big as we think. I was also thinking about making a thin sleeve and glue/epoxy it to the inside and replace it later when i get hold of one. Classic car season just started over here but i guess over in California it is summer all around.?The one on Ebay looked kind of rough, didnt it? I didnt know that it was used in different carsYears, do someone know what cars/years that used this shifter?

I just searched by the original GM part number and one place shows to have a new "lever" part number 9779349 on hand. Here's their contact info if you'd like to give them a try. Just be sure to ask for a photo of the part to verify that its not mislabeled or misboxed.

Here's an older post for a nice looking shifter assy in the parts section here, it doesn't show that it sold.

The shifter lever 9779349 was used in 1966-67 A-body 2-speed A/T and in 1965-68 B-body TH400 A/T cars.

Hope this helps some.

Seems that a different detent plate would have been used between the two speed and three speed shifters? I remember having to install a new plate when we converted my friend's 66 GTO two speed auto to a 2004R. Or would you be dissecting the shifter and just using the handle? Then again you will have the correct plate in your old one if you wanted to transplant it to the new assembly.

Because the break is out of sight, you can fix with a small collar and tiny screws. It is not difficult and does not take too much effort, but you will have to remove console etc. Its a common problem for these shifters. My repair method has lasted over 20 years.

I have a nice shifter from a 1966 Grand Prix. The casting number doesn’t match the number Kenth posted but maybe that’s a part number and the casting number is different. I have never shipped anything out of the country but will. Maybe someone has some input on the best way.
Let me know if this will help you, I will send it to you for the cost of shipping.

Hi Anstein,

Just to make sure you get the correct lever for your ‘66 automatic w/console.

My MPC shows the same number that Grant posted in post #6 and Kenth in #9 (9779349).

Chris.

Just pulled out the console of the car and the number on the lever is the same as on the lever that Rob posted picture of. Maybe the lever is the same on many of these pontiacs but when they put it in the shifter it got a new number that could be serviced??

Part casting numbers and catalog numbers often differ.
Did you have any luck with the place showing the NOS piece available?

Hi folks
I got the handle that Rob sent me in the mail today. It was exact the same as the one sitting in the car. I boltet out the old one and put the one i got from Rob in there and it works perfectly. Only difference i could see is the color of the spring. I have to say many thanks for the help ive got here and it is good to see how helpfull people on this board are. Many thanks to all of you and special to Rob that got me the much needed part.
So it seems that the shifter handle itself is the same on the big cars .
Thanks
Anstein
