Those are spectacular numbers !. Under .500 lift with a AFB and AFB intake too boot. I have a low rise AFB intake and a high rise AFB intake laying around and I figured they were worthless for making power. Not true.

Awesome! Did Dave build the whole engine or just the head work?

I feel exactly the same. Excellent numbers for a good ol' 389. Helped a friend put together a '65 389 with those same pistons and heads but the heads were not worked and the cam was a Comp 268. 4 speed '65 with a 3.36 gear and the car really scoots......most don't believe it's 'only' a 389! I'm running a warmed over 389 in my own '65, and it runs way stronger than the 428 it replaced over 30 years ago!

Dave did the head work and helped with a lot of advice, and Paul Carter also gave a lot of advice and picked the cam for me. A local machine shop (owned by a friend of the family) did all of the machine work and most of the final assembly.

Who? Worrell’s or Gerald Dixon are the last two ship in the Louisville area I would trust with a Pontiac.

One of Dixon's protegee's. He's asked me not to mention his name in this forum at this time because he's entirely covered up right now. It took a year to get my engine back, and was well worth the wait, but it's a one man operation and he is buried.

1hp per ci - nice.

Probably some more in it with 4 tube headers.

I think so too. I'll be putting a set of the Ram Air manifolds on it with 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust. The dyno operator did say that his dyno is a bit stingy too, so i was glad to hear that.

I ran a similar cam with a 240 cfm #16 D-Port head (400 cid) about 20 years ago. .540 / .565 lift. 255/265 @ .050 106 also.

Great higher end power, drove ok on the street with the Jim Wangers 4.33 geared 4 pinion 10 bolt rear (before I sent the 4.33 rear to Tenny to go back under the Wangers 64 GTO.

Gas mileage sucked on a 150 mile trip. 20+ gallons used on that trip.

So my point is you can make around 500 HP with a similar engine and factory d-port heads but the engine will be a gas hog based on my experience. But it is not a true street engine by any means with that duration camshaft.
I did drive it on the street about 4 years.

Best it ever ran was 11.55 at 117 in the 64 GTO convertible body.
I still have the complete engine on a stand in the garage.

Nice job on the dyno numbers.

I grew up with a 66 Catalina station wagon. 3 on the tree. Got 19mpg on trips. About what SUVs get today.

Here is the cam info from Lunati. I accidentally posted the advertised duration. Duration at .050 is 219/227. Not a big cam at all, should be fine for gas mileage.
"Hydraulic Flat Tappet Cam. Great torque monster for 400-455 c.i. daily driven street performance vehicle. Excellent torque and HP production with heavier emphasis on the low to mid range. Will work in tri-power applications with 389-455 c.i. engines. Choppy idle. ;Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 262/268 ;Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 219/227 ;Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .468/.489 ;LSA/ICL: 112/108 ;Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd ;RPM Range: 1300-5500" Just to give credit where credit is due also, I rebuilt that Carter with a kit from Carbking. Top notch kit. I should probably order a spare.

Nice build, you'll definitely feel that torque when you get on it.

+2 or 3

1HP/CID with a pretty much "stock" type build is getting it done nicely in my book.

It will be pump gas friendly and reliable in long term service as well. Plus nice to see some "old school" parts clearly showing the potential of the early stuff which we don't see much of on here........Cliff

Kinda brings some respect to the little, engine. Around hear people still crush them, might pick one up for a future build?

Definitely nice looking and a nice build. It will be interesting to see how it runs in the car. Carbking's kits are really nice.

Thanks again everyone. I just did A LOT of reading mostly on here, paying attention to what's been posted here in the past, especially guys like Paul Carter, Paul K, Cliff and SD Dave to name a few. Talking to SD Dave Bisschop and Paul Carter to comfirm what i was thinking, and again Paul making the cam choice for me. I was between a Crower 60916, and the one i used that Paul steered me towards. Thanks again Paul. I love the old Carter AFB's. Simple, reliable and will get the job done. Stock size 1.96 / 1.66 valves.
