Default '66 GTO console restoration

What is the best way to paint the black background between the raised chrome strips on the console? What paint should be used?

~30% gloss black. You can use use rattle can black in eggshell gloss. Semi-gloss is too shiny and flat is too flat. As for application, mask the perimeter but leave the ribs open. Spray the whole thing and then after a few hours, take a NEW razor blade and carefully shave off the tops of the ribs going lengthwise. Don't scrape with the blade or you'll scratch the chrome. Then you can fine-tune it by taking a paper towel dampened with lacquer thinner, folded into 1/6 size or so, and then very carefully wipe the tops of the ribs lengthwise. Don't have too much thinner on the paper or it will run between the ribs and make a mess.

I used pinstripe tape to mask the ribs.

I've done it with a spray can, and shortly after painting, run a damp, stiff sponge over the top of the ribs. No need to scrape. Fast and effective. If the paint sets before you can wipe it all off, a little acetone on the sponge or a rag will remove it.

I did my M/T valve covers with the pin stripe tape & for me that worked the best, as I tried to paint them by spraying them all & then wipe off the top ribs after with a rag & a little bit of paint thinner when the paint thinner dripped even just a little bit it took of the paint down in the lower part of the ribs. So I started over & pin striped the valve covers & it worked great. All you do is spray as light or as heavy as you need or want & pull off the tape & your done. Best way I've found.
