It's an old 4 speed automatic. We made a ratchet type shifter. Pull back and it up shifts, forward it down shifts. Most of the old shifters for these are hard to find, very expensive and not very good. The drivability is not as bad as I thought it was going to be but it does shift hard both up and down.

Hydro-stick
Yeah, but I bet it launches like a scalded dog. I remember those from growing up in Van Nuys, Ca.

My father had a '57 pontiac with the 4 speed automatic. I never drove it. Too young. He also had a '60 Cadillac with the 4 speed automatic. A 390/325 engine. Certainly a heavy car but alot of fun to drive. I could power brake that car and squeal the back tires easily. That car was pretty quick for what it was. Raced it a few times and did well considering. I often wonder why they did away with that 4 speed automatic?? Was in troublesome?? Anything had to be better then the Chevy 2 speed Powerslide. I know they use them for racing, but I never liked them. I don't know why it took them so long to come out with the TH350 and 400, Carmine.

Todd- are the torus members cut for higher stall speed? Does it use the Pontiac style members or the Olds style? Pontiac planetaries (4.08 1st)?

Both the driven and the driving torus halves have been cut and furnace brazed. I'm not sure if the torus is Olds or Pontiac. I've posted a picture any help would be appreciated. I'll have to go back and find my notes but I thought we figured 3.82 first gear. Thanks Jack this is my first hydro, seems to be working really well but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Todd |

Looks to be a Pontiac torus member. It's cut just a little more than mine, which has a stall speed of about 3,400 RPM (with 382 c.i. engine). How much stall speed do you get? It's surprising to me that the higher stall speed isn't really noticeable just cruising around. Back when I built mine everybody used the 4.08 gearset to get off the line quickly, but for everyday use I think your 3.82 makes more sense.
