Greg
Would you believe the paint came from Home Depot? The brand is Behr and it says high gloss enamel for high use areas, glass like finish. I have a lot leftover if you can't get some mixed up from the code let me know and will figure out how to ship some to you. What paint did you use to refinish your metal dash? I have the Ames Dark Aqua for the soft surfaces. I need to air brush a small spot on the dash. See attachments. HIS I know the Lemans had emblems on door panel. Tempest did not. I just checked a reference book that is photocopies of information the factory provided for 1964 - 1970 Tempest, Lemans, Lemans Sport, GTO, Judge, Sprint. The book contains press releases, specifications, ordering information, and trim levels for all models. There are factory pictures of 68 Lemans with the emblem but the Tempest door panel does not have an emblem. |

Thanks for the code Mcronk. That is pretty incredible that they got it that close. Looks just right to me. With that I may get around to restoring my original wheel.
The dash paint I got from a link on the old Classical Pontiac forum site. I think the same product is now available from 'Color-Rite'. They mixed it in an aerosol can for me based on the factory codes. I dyed some of the interior parts some years later and I got that from TCP Global in California. Same deal, I called and gave them the interior color code.

They use a digital camera much like body shops do to color match. The paint work I had done recently I took car to the automotive paint store and they used a camera to get a starting point. We then did several small custom mixes before finding one that matched. It still requires a someone with experience and skills to get it just right.
Thanks for info. |

Been doing some work on my dash recently and taped up my wheel to protect it. When I removed the tape it pulled off some stain, so I ended up refreshing my wheel. I did some forum digging and ccass mentioned they used to mix American Walnut and Ebony stain on the wheels after sanding with 300-600 gritand used satin polyurethane to protect the finish.
I ended up doing about four light coats over the stripped areas and two over the rest of the wheel. I mottled it on using a larger model car paint brush and lightly blotted it with a shop towel after it set for about 10 minutes. I found that American Walnut with a tiny bit of Ebony worked great to touch up the wheel. You can see, my wheel is a little darker and has more red in it than the earlier pics I posted. As a result, it matches the dash woodgrain better now After I let it dry for a few days, I masked the spokes and sprayed three light coats of satin polyurethane. Good as new!

I was staging 68 install ready parts for my car in the basement for about 4 years. Didn't get any complaints until I had all the painted & polished panels hanging from the floor trusses & I told the family nobody was allowed to go in the basement anymore. Got a lot of interesting looks for that one....
I think everybody's car parts come in the house. Its part of the deisese we have. Can't get over how nice that wheel looks!
